hey dvx long time lurker. I've been following this blog for 6 years now and this is my first time creating a post. me and my partner want to start a (film, photography and design ) company but we are having trouble figuring out a unique timeless and or catchy company name. if anybody wants to sell us an idea we would be happy to pay

please email or pm me with ideas finesse185@gmail.com

It's the hardest choice you'll ever have to make. A color, plus an animal both chosen at random used to be standard for indie film startups, e.g. "Blue Goat". Well, perhaps a more cuddly animal would be better. And something easy to spell. "Turquoise Rhinoceros" probably wouldn't do. Helps with the logo, which is the next hardest decision. Initials or abbreviated name combinations are popular also.

There are some company name generators that let you specify the number of characters and then tests the generated name to see if the domain name is taken. Good for finding a short name. Pay attention to the ease with which you can spell it when giving out your email address etc.

Don't waste your money buying a name. Spend your budget on logo design after you have your name.

There are several good ways to get your production company/media company name. Find an inspiration point, and if the actual inspiration is too complicated then come up with a simplified interpretation.

Do you have an office in a notable landmark? Perhaps it's a building with a backstory, or maybe you're in a creative space like a loft.

Favorite childhood pet? Maybe it is something that you and your partners have in common.

What about a memorable landmark that you pass every day that has meaning? Maybe it's a particular intersection, or an Interstate exit, or a monument.

Or, maybe you wait and name the company after the first major project for which it is organized.

Maybe you had a meeting one night where you decided to form this company, and the conversation took place over a unique beverage or food item... or something happened at that meeting that got you all laughing hysterically (strange menu item, spelling error on a sign, or something very common that just became funny under the circumstances)... or the meeting took place at a memorable location (corner pub, "breakfast all day" diner, etc.).

this is extremely difficult

Only insomuch as you make it. What's in a name? Some production company names are picked from random sources just to sound cool. Some are derived from things that have meaning in the owner's life, or something that serves as a reminder of what started the production company idea. It doesn't really matter, as long as the name you create is something you own and are happy with.

I gave you plenty of starting points, but I'll get a little more specific:

Do you have a notable landmark as or near your workplace? Let's say you're on the corner of 4th and Main: 4th Corner. Or you have a loft space as your office: Media Loft. Or maybe the address is 387 4th Ave: Studio 387, or even Loft 387.

Is there a landmark you pass every day, or that has significance to you? Maybe it's where you get off the Interstate for work, or to go to visit a dear friend or family member, or to go back to a place that has sentimental value: Exit 417. Maybe you pass some sort of statue or monument that always reminds you where you are: Concrete Canon.

Perhaps you and your business partner conceived of this production company over a round of drinks at a local watering hole: Corner Pub. Or it was at a cafe that you frequent: Bistro Media.

Of course, you could always just use the two last names of you and your cohort.

How did you come up with your DVXUser user name? What does it mean?

Do you see where I'm going here? The sky's the limit. (Hey, there's another one...)

My co-producer's last name is Cashion. I'd suggested a production company using parts of each of our last names -- Cash Rich Productions.

Thumb through a dictionary. Maybe something will catch your eye

Eyecatcher Films! :-)

Just to continue Alex's train of thought.....

Pick something from your life.

My first "recording studio" was all of my gear crammed into an alcove in the living room of our tiny apartment; I've been Alcove Audio Productions for almost 30 years now, even though I now have a decent studio space.

However, that space does have one low beam most people - including myself - have to duck under when entering. My dad, who is 6' 4", visited while it was under construction, ducked under the beam and said "Low Bridge," so it's been Low Bridge Recording ever since.

I named my business after the address at which it started - 5801 Productions came from 5801 SW 59th St in Miami. Use something simple that you've come across. I agree that it was a difficult decision to make.
