Ok so I am a premiere editor on a PC and the best workflow for me has been to use the pannasonic transcoder. Now (today right now) I am working with premiere pro cs4 on a mac and it is not handling AVCHD too well so I am looking for a way to transcode the footage to DVCPro HD. I tried to just use adobe media encoder but it just keep crashing, so I need to know a good program (preferable free or cheap) that will do the conversion for me.

Thank you all in advance!

If you have the DVCProHD codec, then you can use:

ClipWrap2
VoltaicHD
VideoPierHD
Toast 9/10.

But you need the DVCProHD codec, which only FCP provides.

Or you can transcode to AIC or pro res from the above apps.

Never mind the 4.1 update fixed the problem. Thank you for help quick response though I really appreciate it!

I used Toast 10 on one of my other clients machines and it worked great. However for this project I wanted to use a work flow I was familiar with, and didn't really want to buy a new program. But like I said the 4.1 update worked great on his machine and I was very glad to be able to edit the AVCHD files without a transcode! It really gets me more excited for my soon to come computer upgrade!!!

So, you enjoy editing AVCHD without transcoding first?

*cough* Dave... How can this be?

ATL:

Our issue is what constitutes "editing."

As I've indicated I, and would I venture others, prefer a 4:2:2 color space and I-Frame editing.

Native AVCHD has neither.

Nor do many have a powerful enough machine to provide a RT native full frame and resolution avchd multiple stream experience. And not many NLEs have this capability on mainstream Macs or PCs.

We can go another round here, but why. Glad it works for you.

For many others, transcode makes more sense.

best
