I started to shoot a flick last weekend. I am using a GH!. I'm shooting the flick in B&W 24P AVCHD. There are a couple of scenes that I want to shoot slowmo. From what I have been reading I will have to shoot 720P at 60p. (sorry if i sound like a retard thats because I am when it comes to this.)

How will I be able to mix and match this footage? Is there anyway other way to do it? I already started shooting and due to lack of money I cannot go back. Any advice from you guys would be greatly appreciated. I am shooting again this weekend so I sorta need to have a gameplan. I mean I DO have one, but this sorta put a banana peel in my path.. Any step by step workflow would be gfreatly appreciated also as I am not that technical. I mean I am tech enough but not like you guys.

Thanks in advance

Matt

PS, I will be using Vegas 9 pro to edit. I have After Effects and am willing to get plugins to help me achieve this..

You should just edit the whole movie in a 720p timeline, you can put your 1080p footage in there just fine. Also I'd recommend shooting the movie in color and converting to B&W in post. Yeah for slow motion shoot 720/60p at a 1/120 shutter.

If I remember correctly, I was told that when the clip is in the timeline in Vegas, to press and hold SHIFT and drag the clip to slow it down. I may be wrong, but I'm pretty sure that is what I was told.

Ben, Would it look different, i mean the actual footage since the resolutions will be different? Also, If I know the end result will be B&W and we are also doing the makeup for Black and White, does it still benefit to shoot in color?

So are you suggesting that i shoot the normal scenes the way I been shooting them. 1080 24p and shoot the other stuff 720 60p and edit all in a 720 24p timeline?

Shoot and edit in 1080p @ 24fps. For slow Motion = Shoot 720 @ 60p (Shutter speed @ 1/120th) and in edit conform to 23.976 @ 1080p. Thats it.

Shoot in color. You will have total freedom to manipulate your channel mix upon conversion. This will give you more options to change the tonal range, applying filters, mimic various film stocks... "White Ribbon" used the same approach.

Vegas will do it fine, with a few precautions.....
In Project properties- Ruler, change to Absolute Frames,
When you first put your clips on the timeline, rightclick and Disable resample.
Done.

I would edit in a 720p timeline if there's a lot of slow motion, if there's not much then maybe not worth doing whole film in 720p...but 720p upscaled won't look that great and 1080p downscaled might actually look better than normal 1080p...but your whole video would be 720p.

there isnt alot of slowmo in the film. maybe 3 or four scenes tops. Hmmm.. dont know what to do. I don't want it to look like crap if I upscale it.. But I want the project to be 1080p. Hmmm. Which is a better tradeoff? Is there a plugin that I could get that I could slow down my 24p 1080 footage and make it look good? Crap.. why is life so hard...

720/60p looks fine upscaled.

You can use Twixtor to slow down 1080/24p...but it's best to use 60p. Vegas is great for mixing both formats on the same timeline and rendering out to 1080p.

Dont you love it?:thumbsup:Sony Vegas Baby!

If you are going to shoot in B&W then a word of warning. Shooting in Smooth B&W last year, I later noticed some very colourful moire patterns on a shot of a checkered sofa! I would personally shoot in colour, occasionally switching over to one of the B&W film modes, purely to check how your lighting is going to look in monotone.

Curious about this issue myself... will be starting a documentary project that I want to shoot in 1080/24p, but which will require shooting a good bit of sports and I'm worried about slowmo (which would be a nice option for all of our game action footage), and also the flicker effects of shooting sports at 24p. I am considering other options for the game footage such as 720 60p, but don't really like the idea of mixing/up-res-ing either.

Would shooting in 1080/60i with Native unchecked perhaps be an improvement over 24p with regards to slowmo? Maybe take the 60i footage to be slowmo'd into a 29.97 timeline, then apply the slowmo, then export with reverse pulldown to 24p? Would that do a darn thing?

720/60p looks fine upscaled.

I also agree. I shot a GH1 short at 1080p then shot my slo-mo stuff at 720p and dropped it in a 1080p timeline. Looks great. If you're doing your job as a storyteller then 99.99999% of viewers won't be able to tell 720p clips vs. 1080p clips with the GH1.
