 Hi, I just started shooting with an HVR-Z1 and I can't seem to get that film look, which I assume is from wrong use of the shutter speed. Most films and TV shows, I believe, are shot in 24fps, while I can only switch from 15 to 30 fps. Any ideas?

Also, I've tried filming the moon on a cloudless night, no fog or anything, but all I see on the playback is a white circle, no details, or "the man in the moon." How can I do this without buying anything extra?

Thanks!

Well, as for the "film look" with the HVR-Z1, good luck on trying to get it. I don't believe that camera supports true 24p like with the panasonic. As for the moon, try stopping your lense down and you should get the detail in there....

I believe that even though 24p is helpful to getting film look, the real tricks to getting it right are lighting and control over DoP. If you can emulate major movie's looks, people can forget about the frame rate.

"control over DoP"

Now that's funny! DoP technically stands for "Director of Photography", or DP for short. I'm a DP but if anyone tried to control me, I think the look of the film would suffer!

I think Karl151k meant to type DoF, short for "depth of field". He's absolutely right. Lighting is everything, but control over the depth of field (and frame rate) will definitely go a long way towards the "film look" or better yet, "cinematic look and feel". Let's face it, we're working with video, not film. You just can't get it to look exactly like "film", but you can definitely get a "cinematic look and feel".

The key thing to remember is that he said "control over" and not "shallow" when referring to depth of field. Shallow DoF is really cool, but it helps to know when to use it. Composition is not just the rule of thirds.

Hi, I just started shooting with an HVR-Z1 and I can't seem to get that film look

Of course there are a few elements to consider. I think the top 2 components that give a good film look IMO are:

1/ Lighting
2/ Camera Moves

Then 24fps

then lastly DOF it does enhance the look, but it cant be used in every situation. For example I think its good to draw attention to a character, action or object. Its useful when creating B-roll.

Get your lighting and camera moves right and you be off to the best start you could be.
