need comments on my potential audio setup

isn't using the motu pretty much the same as using the mbox though? maybe a little better interface, but what else would make it a better choice?

Well,

1. Standalone operation - it's a powerful mixer with no computer attached
2. Designed to be battery-powered
3. 2 more preamps, many more inputs and outputs
4. SMPTE sync capability

So, you can actually use it exactly like a production mixer, in a mixer-bag, with no computer.

ullanta has found a good solution for you, but i still maintain that what what you really want is a good 3 channel mixer, a couple decent mics (like an oktava and an AT4073a) and a good year of gaining experience with that equipment.

thanks again for all the comments. it looks like the best thing for me to do is to rent some of the recommended gear and try it all out, then see what is going to work best for my situation. i really appreciate all the advice.

Yes, that's best... you can also save yourself rental money and gain valuable experience by volunteering to assist some sound folks on a gig or two... or to assist on a production that has access to equipment but no sound guy - those aren't so hard to find, especially in student productions!

those are great suggestions by ullanta... nice place to start. definitely a smart move - nothing teaches you like learning with someone elses stuff in a world where if you make a mistake or two or six its ok...
