Need an affordable audio setup.

Hello, newer filmmaking here.

I'm in need an audio setup (mic, windscreen, boompole), but don't have a big knowledge of current companies out there in the audio department. I have a budget of 400 $ to spend, and will be used for all around use (outdoor, indoor).

I was thinking of the Rode NTG-2, since I will need the battery power.

Also my camera doesn't have XLR outputs, how can i plug my mic in?

Thanks!

There really isn't a one mic fits all choice available. Shotguns such as the Rode mentioned usually don't fare well as hypercardioids indoors. Still, you could do far worse than Rode's kit. Something like this - http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/421940-REG/Rode__NTG_2_Shotgun_Microphone.html#specifications - though it's a little over your stated budget would serve you well.

To connect to your camera you'll need some sort of adapter - I personally favour Juicedlink but Beachtek also has a following. A less expensive alternative is to use a low to high matching tranformer such as http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/589872-REG/Pearstone_8111240_LMT100_Low_to.html

David,

Look at the stickies at the top of the forum. There is a thread there that talks about different packages at different price ranges.

Honestly, you won't get much of anything in the way of pro or prosumer quality gear for $400. Spend the $400 and hire someone that already has gear.

The mic will be used for mainly personal short films and the web, so I would prefer to purchase one.

I feel stupid for not seeing the sticky though, sorry, thanks for the advice.
