Need Advice on renting out a DVX100b

I have a couple of people interested in renting my fairly new dvx100b for shoots - one guy wants to rent it for 3 weeks for a movie and another guy wants to rent it for various weekends. I am interested in finding out how much I should charge per day, per week, etc. And how to handle payment where I have all ends covered (would I need a contract, insurance, hold on to copy of license and/or credit card in case of damage?). I also have the dvx user guide, a nice backpack, tripod. I'm honestly pretty clueless about how this renting process works and don't want to make a silly, costly mistake. Any advice would be amazing! Thanks in advance!

well rates will vary depending on location. in vancouver i believe it is $35 a day to rent a DVX... not positive though. you will definitely want insurance (you should have it anyway!) and make sure the policy covers renting the equipment out. You don't really need a contract, just make them sign a form (the invoice) stating the total cost for the intended duration (and write a part about going over the intended time or early return policies) and that they will in fact pay said amount. dont give them the camera until they sign the invoice.

thats all i got for ideas.

thanks

thanks

Thanks, I guess that's a start. Any idea what kind of insurance or where to look?
I've heard in general that it's not good to rent out equipment b/c the risk is too great and you won't be covered etc. but hopefully I can get more advice on that too.

sorry, can't help you there. talk to some insurance agents (homeowner's insurance might be able to cover you, dont kbow about for renting out tho)

Rental insurance (to cover you when others rent your gear) is very expensive as far as I know. You're probably better off requiring some sort of deposit, or that the renters have proof of their own insurance.

thanks! you all have been a great help! do any of you know anyone who has successfully rented out a camera?

A quick search shows a minimum of $100/day for a DVX100. The rental houses charge more, but they *can.*
$100/day seems very reasonable to me.
