Need advice on difficult lightning

Hi

I am new to HMC150 and have a question.

I am going to record something inside a church. It has some big windows that of course will give sunlight inside. Inside the light is on so there is a mix.

The challenge is, that often the light from outside changes during a 1 hrs. shoot, f.ex. the sun is shining in the start and in the end there are only clouds.

What do you guys do in a situation like that.

Another question, is it possible to only have WB on manual and everything else on auto. Cannot find this in the manual.

Thanks. :-)

Regarding your second question -- I think the answer is “yes.” Simply turn off the ATW in the AUTO SW menu. I could be wrong, because I’ve never attempted such a scenario -- but I think that’s right.

The answer to your first question relates to exposure -- the reason you have the “man” in “cameraman” -- meaning skillful manual control to respond to changes in conditions. Doing this properly means learning the HMC well. If you get it right -- you can produce results nearly indistinguishable from cameras that cost many tens of thousands of dollars more than the HMC. Don’t do it well -- and you’ll end up with crappy video.

In terms of “automated” filming the HMC is awful, and you’d get better results with a true “prosumer” camera like the Canon HV30 or Panasonic TM300.

If the HMC is “prosumer,” then it’s the worst prosumer camera ever offered to prosumers -- because it really is an HPX170 that records to AVCHD -- with a learning curve exactly as steep as the HPX170.

So -- my not-so-helpful answer to your first question is -- begin the journey of learning the HMC. The truth is there’s no simple answer -- no simple setting that will have the camera automatically make things great.

I understand that Barry Green will be coming out with a book on the HMC150 in about a month. I recommend buying it and memorizing it. If you can’t wait that long, Barry Green has an introductory video about the HVX200 (I think it’s called “HVX BootCamp”) that can be very, very helpful with getting acquainted with the HMC150. The general idea is to ignore all the P2 stuff -- but most all the functions and scene file material is perfectly relevant.

I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful.

Good luck!

You can put the camera in manual white balance(preset) and auto iris and auto focus. I wouldn't reccommend anything in auto. You will need to manually adjust the iris as it gets brighter and darker.
