Actually, reading through the post and Matthew beat me to it.  See if you can find someone in your area who will partner with you.  That way you can spend your budget on the project.  

Just take your time who you pick.  

Then do a short first to see how you work together.  You want input and advice but you don't want someone who'll take over your project.  But you also need to listen to them because of their experience.

You just have to find a balance somewhere in-between.  If you lay down the rules beforehand that helps to save fighting on the set.

I am not certain of the age of your talent, or where in the country you will be shooting, but if you have any minors on the set and you are shooting in California they will need work permits and a studio teacher no matter when you shoot it. Many people think that they can avoid the studio teacher issue by shooting on weekends or over a holiday, this isn't the case. My daughter is a working actress so I have a lot of interaction with the studio teachers in the LA area, if you need any recommendations or need additional information on how to obtain the permits, just let me know. Having just shot a feature with minors, this can be a considerable additional expense.

Shoot in the summer and you'll avoid the studio teacher. Also this is an independent production and if he has only 10 grand to spend he's not going to be able to hire a teacher who'll cost him most likely 1/4 of his budget for their one week of work.

Thanks for your support. I was not aware of the issue regarding studio teachers. I'm not even sure what/who they are. Are these people who's job is to make sure minors are not being exploited?? Anyhow, I plan to use 18+ year-old actors and shoot in July/August. This is one of the first decisions I made when I started conceptualizing the movie. In fact, one of the reason's I'm waiting to shoot in the summer is because one of the actors I want to hire will be 18 by then.
