Need Advice - HVX to DVD and Web

I'm sure this has been discussed, but I can't seem to find my answers in an efficient manner, so I thought I would start a new thread.

We have an upcoming shoot with the HVX (with P2 cards), which I am familiar with - but have not worked directly with one yet.

My main concern is post production (and shooting for post production). My editor will be using Vegas 6 - but does not have Raylight or Cineform. As a side note, I do have a copy of Avid Xpress Pro - which to my knowledge can handle the P2 footage without any "extras."

The film will be shown on DVD and the web.

So my question is what would be the best work flow? Should we just skip P2 - shoot SD and edit in Vegas since it will be shown on DVD and the web? Or should we shoot P2, edit in AXP and then export that to DVD and web files (is there complications to this or just a standard simple export process)? Color Correction will be performed in Vegas. Can you downconvert in camera? I just want to get the best looking picture possible, but since it will not be displayed in HD anyway - what's the best way of going about that?

Please help out this HVX newbie with any advice you can offer.

DVCpro 50

DVCpro 50

redgiant,

Barry green originally posted a whole thread on this subject on the best end product as far as compression goes for the DVD route. Not sure where that thread is exactly but by working in the DVCpro 50 codec ( correct me if i am wrong ) you will retain more color information as compared to shooting it in dv 4:1:1 with DVCpro 50 4:2:2 i believe when compressed for DVD (MPEG-2) you should end up with 4:2:0. Ask Barry he is the expert. So your end result for DVD distribution is a better end product.

Can't help you out with your main question, but in relation to above, and to help you plan your workflow, you might like to know what I've just learned on a thread I started today, namely - you can downconvert in camera, but it's unlikely you can do it on the run... ie convert as you shoot. Here's a link to the thread in case it throws anything else up in the next while...
