FS7: need advice: (custom) settings for event docu

I'd need some advice from you guys. I never shot custom except slog3 with a slog3-to-CineEI LUT in the beginning. I have an upcoming assignment for a big indoor event. Interviews, catch the mood, capture some speeches.. I never did that with the FS7 and I am thinking about which settings would be best. Fixed WB in CineEI might become critical and I'd prefer a setting with adjustable WB. I know the FS7 is probably not the best tool but it's what I have and I don't want to spend the small rate for rental expenses. Thanks for help!

What are the client's expectations for colour correct?

If they're happy with a REC709 look shoot with HG7 and do a modest colour correction and deliver. Set your zebras for 82 for 90% white and you're good to go.

I resort to CUSTOM HG7 for hellish lighting, you'll get white balanced video with plenty of meat to play with. I've found I can make well exposed white balanced HG7 match CineEI footage better than CineEI footage in horrendous lighting. Some of these modern low energy bulbs are nightmare!

If the lighting isn't as bad as you're imagining go for Cine EI.

For weddings I shoot HG3 (very minimal CC is meant to be done, if any -> they want useable right out of cam).
Being in Custom for quick turnaround / no CC when you're in ridiculous lighting scenarios is a big help! Wedding receptions are ridiculous for different types of lighting!

... OR, if you're very much used to Cine EI, you can shoot in custom with Matrix set to: OFF, using Slog3 as your gamma & Sgamut3 as your gamut, and end up with negs that are pretty damned close to Cine EI, with the added benefit of freedom-of-white-balance, and adding gain in camera if/when you're that way inclined.

It's the way that I shoot about 95% of my obs doc material, for the aforementioned reasons. Of course, your client may want something that's ready to cut with minimal grading, in which case the above mentioned HG solutions should work well for you.

Best of luck,

jason

Second the HG7 option.. its a good halfway house.. still decent DR but can be CC on edit software.. the F5 has a" F55 like gamma setting".. I usually use this.. don't know if the Fs7 has it.. just under expose a tad for the HG7

I always use my own custom Matrix but I know plenty of people who use the default matrix setting. When in custom the camera is designed to use a matrix. It just becomes a normal video camera at that point. Its not something that's awful despite what you read here - perfectly capable of great pictures. Just be careful about face exposure in HG7 don't put it at 70% that's too high and you'll get compression on the faces.
I can send you my matrix if you want it, but really - if you own the camera run some tests and see what looks good to you, There are probably other matrix settings on the web also.
