Need a very good Shotgun

I need a very good Shotgun that will give me a sound that really sounds like a book closing, a tea keetle boiling, the soft sound of a silk dress - in other words natural sounding sounds. I am not happy with the ME66/K6, or the AT4073a I have narrowed it down to these three.

Sanken CS-1

Sennheiser MKH-416

Sennheiser MKH-60

I would like to use in both indoors and out.

Any suggestions.

Thanks

Re: Need a very good Shotgun

what do you record , tea dress or book

for most natural sound use omny
i really dont understand what do you want ???

Re: Need a very good Shotgun

Hi Oleg,
Thanks for your reply.
I'm sorry for my lack of clarity.
I am not happy with the the sound quality from the ME66/K6, or the AT4073a. It just dosen't sound natural to me. I have been using an omni, but when I want a certain sound (for example; the turning of pages in a book) to really dominate the mix, I have been trying to focus on that sound with a shotgun. Maybe that's not the best way? I am trying to direct the viewer's attention to the sound without being
too distracting.

Re: Need a very good Shotgun

Student, it seems what you're asking about is recording foley effects--watching the video and recording effects that are in sync with the action on the screen. Generally, you want foley effects to be able to blend seamlessly with the dialogue and to sound natural. One way to blend the effects is by using the same microphone for foley that you used for the dialogue recording. If you used an MKH-60 for exterior dialogue, you'd use it for exterior foley. If you're asking about the best shotgun to record dialogue and ambient sounds, the MKH-60 is the most natural sounding mic on your list and a fine choice for dialogue recording.

Re: Need a very good Shotgun

Yes, that is exactly what I'm refering to - foley effects.
Thank you Barry. and using the same microphone for both dialogue and foley is what I need to do. I was also trying to record the dialogue and the real live sound together - instead of recording effects in post (foley) that are in sync with the action. I would also need two matching mics to pull this off. I think I will have to have two takes -one with the dialogue on the shotgun - take two with the foley on the same shotgun.

Re: Need a very good Shotgun

Instead of two mics you can do "wild" coverage of the interesting sounds you encounter during production. So you can have natural rich sound recorded on location instead of running foley. After the take with the book closing, you ask to get the sound of that. Call a slate and run an audio-only track. With practice you'll be getting very clear editable material to work with...

Just to clarify, if you do a wild sound only take afterwards, you won't have the frame to stop you placing the mic where the sound sounds best, so you'll be getting high quality audio you can sync in post...

Re: Need a very good Shotgun

Yes I agree.. You should always take a room tone and wild track when you filming your project then you can have consistent background noise to work with and you could continously loop it at post. As for foley work it is always best to use the same mike and setup and do it on location or in a closed room to get the best effect. Just make sure you use a mixer to control intake so you won't blurr out the sound to make it muddy.

you dont need the same mike for foly , you just need the right mike , after that you can shape it in the mix room , put some embiant and it would be fine
use cardioid or hiper for folly even you worked with shot gun on lovaition .

Re: Need a very good Shotgun

Again, you guys have come through with the advice I needed. Thanks so much.
Oh - one more question. Can I use the Sennheiser MKH-416 indoors or would I get better results with the Sanken CS-1 .
or even the Sennheiser MKH-60.
I sure would like to purchase just one really nice shotgun that would work for indoors, outdoors and anything in between.
Thanks again for your very useful advice.

Re: Need a very good Shotgun

It is a good mic. But there are better. What Oleg and Student are talking about are in a class above the ME-66.

Re: Need a very good Shotgun

I think everybody wanted a one mic that would fit all needs. That doesn't exist, mics are like golf clubs. Sometimes you can need an iron 7 and do okay with an iron five, but if you need a wood and only have a putter you'll be in trouble... Bah, who likes golf anyway... I'm 23 for christ's sake... ;D

Who can shot under par, on a regulation length course, with only his putter and a sand wedge.
