Need a good lighting book

I know it's probably been asked me but I was hoping to get opinions from different users.

Thanks,

Re: Need a good lighting book

I agree. I bought a copy of John's book about a month ago. I couldn't believe how much I learned from it.

Here is some good news :D

I just talked to Bill and he said the plan is to have the series on available on DVD this summer. We are going to shoot some updates and extras in July or August.

Re: Need a good lighting book

My vote would be: "Matters of Light and Depth" by Ross Lowel
(yep, inventor of the Lowel light).

I have known Bill for close to ten years. I consider him one of my mentors.
As far as being a part of his crew: I used to go out with him as his sound/video tech. Now that I am a cameraman full time we don’t get to work together as often as I would like. Because he will be in front of the camera, for a change, he called me to operate.

"Matters of Light & Depth" by Ross Lowell
"Lighting for Film & Electronic Cinematography" by Dave Viera

Two of my favorite books on lighting with a wealth of diagrams and insights.

Re: Need a good lighting book

Check out the ASC bookstore for a wealth of great volumes on cinematography.

I find the book "Reflections" to be particularly educational; features lighting diagrams and re-creations of shots from actual movies, shot by a cavalcade of well-respected DP's (e.g., Allen Daviau, Jack Green, Vilmos Zsigmond, etc).

Re: Need a good lighting book

Thanks, Stas!

I made my order just moments ago for "Reflections".

However, here is a better link for that book...
http://www.theasc.com/cgibin/store/acsstore.cgi?user_action=detail&catalogno=reflect_paint

The link you supplied sells that book for $89.95 (plus shipping). The link above sells "Reflections" PLUS "Painting With Light" together for $75.00.

Gee, I wish I knew that before I just overpaid...

I have a pretty good lighting book that has interviews, diagrams, etc., but its been around for a while and doesn't appear to be as well-diagrammed as Reflections.

It's called "Film Lighting: Talks With Hollywood Cinematographers and Gaffers" by Kris Malkiewicz.

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/t...=sr_11_1/103-2414476-5518207?v=glance&s=books

Although, it has been around for quite a while, it seems to have similar info as Reflections and even interviews many of the same Cinematographers.

Re: Need a good lighting book

"Matters of Light & Depth" is a perfectly good place to start. Good illustrations and sensible advice.

Re: Need a good lighting book

wholly crap that ASC store is run by a buncha monkeys.. I ordered that book a few weeks ago and it seems nobody actually knows what is in stock or out of stock, when or where things are or what is going on lol.. Terry, have you gotten your book yet?

Re: Need a good lighting book

I suggest reading "Lighting for Digital Video" and then reading "matters of light and depth"

Re: Need a good lighting book

Love Cinematography By Blain Brown, but I must say this Reflections is being a hell of a (Good) read. Bought it from the ASC store, without hassle...
