Need a decent mic for my HMC...

I'm going to buy mic for my hmc that I'm going to use outside while we do some interviews. I've googled some time now and I've found the Shure PG 48 XLR mic.

Does anyone have any experience with this model and the hmc? I know it's not the best microphone out there, but it probably should do the job with some simple voice recording and such..?

Hi,

well the mic isnt the best at all... looking at the frequency curve tells you its just vom 70hz to aprox. 15khz... but it should do it for interviews if you can guarantee to keep the microphone really - and i mean really close to the speaker.... anything else will cause bad results.

I just got a RODE NTG-1 and so far it is phenominal. You may wanna try either a RODE NTG-1 or NTG-2...

...er, oh wait, just looked up the Shure. You wanted a handheld... and its only $40. Sorry, my bad.

For handheld interview mics, you might want to step up just a bit to either of these:

If you spent $3000+ on a cam, I can't imagine going uber-cheap on a mic. Even $200 is a cheap mic.

In any event, the two I mentioned are first class interview mics. They have internal suspension to reduce handling noise and some built in wind protection. Don't expect mics like this to have much reach.

I suggest hanging in the audio section of DVXuser, you can learn a lot by just reading the stickies.

agreed, sound is just as important as sight; get something tried and true and keep it aimed properly. cheap sound is rather obvious and hideous, try youtube. you can always tell onboard from off-cam mics, and youtube is a poor example.

I've got the MD-42... Great mic! It cuts out a lot of unwanted background noise, and records the deeper frequencies of the voice, but also has the nice highs in the sound.... I would recommend this over any other mic (I have used a lot for ENG work!)...

Where I intern over at ABC 7 news, they use these ones, and so does NBC 4 (Los Angeles)...

Thanks for all the great replies guys!

The thing is that I got this job that came up from nowhere, and I don't have any time to order a mic because it's Saturday and the job is allready tomorrow. So I have to buy what I can find here or near my working area.

That's when I found that mic. So I'm going to use it for jus a couple of quick interviews.. We're not really after any super-high end stuff, just some voice mixed with some music... I'll see what I can find at the local shops!

I have a NTG2 myself and I'm not that impressed with it. Picks up an awful lot of off axis sound.
Several other people I've spoken with were also disappointed with the performance for their NTG2s.

I use the Electro Voice RE50N/D-B - Omni-Directional Mic at a lot of noisy events and love it. Sorry to hear you're rushed but if you want any kind of quality, you'll need to spend upwards of around $150 & more.

Sorry ramkuma, but the ME66 is a real waste of money for the quality. I'd strongly recommend a used Sennheiser 416 (I purchased mine for less than the cost of a new ME66) and you will have a mic that is amazing and lasts forever. You'll need good wind protection for any mic, so don't forget that. If you need to go into the more low-budget range than a used 416, look at the Audio Technica 4073a or one of the Rode shotguns.

BTW, many dealers will push you to the ME66 - they get a great margin on it (better than most other mics out there, hence the pushing).

A friend gave me an old Av jefe dm 2200 dynamic mic. Dont know much about it and very little can be found on google about it, what is this for a mic anyway?

Audio Technica m/s stereo mike is awesome. Love mine and had it for about 5 years now. Just rocks for the price.
