NEC Monitor for Video?

The thing about video is that the computer monitor, aside from resolution and real estate, isn't going to give you what you need. When it comes to color correction/grading, you need to have a properly-calibrated broadcast monitor displaying the video output from your video I/O hardware.

There is a second way that's very close in terms of color accuracy, and that's to send the video out via the DVI/miniDVI/DisplayPort through a Matrox MXO, and then you can use an HD LCD screen. The MXO does proper signal conversion and has setup tools for calibration, turning an external HD set into a broadcast monitor.

I'm not a fan of complex and in-depth grading, and I'm not terribly concerned with the image being identical on TV vs. the computer. I'm not apathetic, but it's not my primary goal. For my personal needs, all I want is a monitor that is more reliable in terms of brightness and color in general than my current less expensive and highly unreliable monitor.

I guess all I want is a better judge of brightness and color in general. It doesn't have to be 100% accurate. My current monitor is practically un-calibrateable and things always end up too dark and overly saturated when I use it as reference.

Given my needs, does this NEC sound right for me?

You could always learn to use your waveform monitor and vector scope.
They will give you an accurate readout where your brightness and color are.

Good Luck!
