GH4 ND Filters

With the discussion of high ND values... does anyone worry about IR and the need for an IR filter or filters that have IR cutoff in addition to ND?

The other issue with filter staking is vignetting for wide angle lenses.

Also what are the costs for ND filters to be used in Matt box holders vs screw on filters?

I tested the Heliopan against the Tiffen 77mm vari-ND and went with Tiffen, my 4x4s are Tiffen too, however I think there are some different quality levels in the Tiffen lineup, the smaller round screw-ins are definitely built differently, but all my variNDs are Tiffen now. I don't see a significant color issue with any of the Tiffens but coming from a broadcast background I am a chronic re-WB guy. The big issues with vari-ND for me are finding something decent or even anything in 46mm for the Lumix 25 or Frankensteining something on the 7-14, its a pita.

Get some step up rings for your smaller lenses.

What about cross paterns problem with the Tiffen as every varind filter is built with a combo on a circular polarizer?
If i remember, i read the heliopan did not suffer from this..?

I own the first version of the Genus elipse variND, in 77mm, is it a good idea to buy the 82mm instead ?

I do, I use 52s on my 46 mount lenses, but then you can't use the native lens hoods, at least not with the vari-ND. There is a Heliopan 46 vari-ND and its like $275, I'm looking at the specs on that right now, maybe it will work on the 25 or maybe I will find a way to mount a hood on the Tiffen 52 vari-ND.

edit: Correction thats $279 for the Heliopan 'variograu' 46mm and it has no front threads.

Cross patterns occur at very wide angles, as well at very high ND strengths. They're all mostly the same, I believe, with the difference in consistency and neutrality.

My tiffens (52, 58 and 77) and B+W 82mm all do this IF YOU ROTATE PAST THE MAX MARK. I'm rarely near the max end though, exterior daylight I need 4 to 6 stops maximum to work at 2.8 or wider.

With GH4? You need more than 6 stops in a sunny exterior to shoot at 2.8 (with speedbooster). I shot an exterior 2 days ago and needed 7 to 8 stops in a sunny day. ISO 200, shutter 50.

I just bought this Hoya ProND 77mm ND-500 9 Stops Neutral Density Filter today for the A7s. That camera's base ISO in S Log is 3200. Crazy.

I also have a 7 2/3 stop for the Lumix zooms.

Depends on your "sunny exterior", broad blazing high noon daylight in California--sure BDE = 1/ISO @ F16 > convert , I work mostly in high latitudes/Arctic or broken-shade forest.
