ND Filters for lenses?

Hi, I have a few different size FD lenses and I definitely need some ND filters. What kind should I get? I looked at the variable ND filters which seem awesome but I can't afford to get it for my lenses.
My plan was to get like 2 ND filters and I can use them individually and when I film in bright daylight settings, I can put both ND filters on. Would that work well or is there something I should know before I do that? Maybe a ND4 and a ND8. or two ND8s?
Thanks!

More glass makes more chance of lens flare and could, in theory, cause very slight optical degradation. In general, there's no problem doing that. A four and an eight should do it. Don't get two eights, you want to be able to fine tune.

Actually in mid daylight I found that two ND8s are needed to get 1/50 s shutter, f/2.8 and 100 ISO - so you need a whole set ND2, 4 & two 8 to be covered. Get ones that are as big as your biggest lens (or even bigger) and then use step-down rings.

For the price of a set of ND filters, you could get the Fader ND from Hong Kong. Or you can make your own variable ND filter by screwing a linear polarizer on top of a circular polarizer.
