ND filter setting does not work

Hi, I am a two days old af100 shooter. With 14-140 lense on and in manual iris mode when I tried to change the filter setting on nd wheel , it suddenly started showing a black circular shape and letters ng appeared on the screen. i brought the setting back to 1 and everything came to normal.

My objective was to open the iris fully to achieve some depth of field and compensate the extra light with nd setting.
Please help.

I am sure you did it right, but, are you sure you turned the knob a full 90 degrees to completely change the filter? There are four filters, 1 is clear, and 2-4 are the NDs which get darker as you go. If one is not fully in place, you will see the holder between the filters and it will say NG (if I remember right).

If it is in place right, I hate to say it but it could be an issue with the camera...
