ND Filter Display

Does anyone know how reliable the recommended ND filter display is? It's just when I was shooting last time the ND 1/64 was flashing, when I flicked the ND on it was a little too dark, I was shooting by a river and the sun was shining so that may explain it, should I use auto iris control to confirm my light settings?

Thanks

Not always reliable.

The camera is always trying to figure out what is 18% and wants to adjust the luminance of the image to its assesment. Sunny bright skys, snow covered ground...etc will trick the camera's internal exposure and auto iris (and the display that tells you whether or not the ND is correct)

I recommend you avoid the auto iris, unless it is absolutely essential, like getting a continuous documentary type of shot from indoors to outdoors.

Set zebra A to 70 and B to 100. Toggle back and forth to see what is blowing out and if your skin tones are correctly exposed. Digital cameras will never see the range of exposure that the human eye can see. If it looks right in the view finder and you are happy with what the zebras tell you, than absolutely ignore the ND 1/64 flashing in the view finder.

Bottom line is keep shooting. The more experience you gain, the better you will shoot.
