If you've got nothing else better to do tomorrow night (Friday 3/14), tune into your local NBC station at 8P Eastern/7P Central, and check out Dateline NBC.

I shot most of the hour over the last month using the F55 and F3. Dvxuser member John Cummings and Chicago cameraman Jordan Campagna worked on the hour as well. I'm told by the producer that, aside from the usual still photos and interrogation videos, there is also a fair amount of courtroom footage we shot a few years back using a 2/3" Sony HDW-700.

We shot using the 50MB MPEG codec on the F55, and rolled to a Nanoflash set to the same codec for the F3. That's one of the things I've grown to love about the F55. I can shoot 4k RAW down to 50MB MPEG all in the same camera without a 3rd party recorder stuck to the back.

NBC Dateline isn't set up to do too much in the way of color correction, so they need a file with a finished baked in look. We set up the cameras using files designed by Macie Video in Boston, and the matching between the F55 and the F3 was spot on. I really don't know how it's going to look when it airs, since the material heads to New York and I have zero input the post process. I do know that, if they do color correct, it's generally done by dropping on a Magic Bullet look in the Avid.

We used CP.2's for most of the interviews. I used a Zeiss 70-200 for the single shot for the 2 on 1 interviews. The B-roll was a mixed bag of CP's, and Duclos, Canon and Zeiss zooms.

Tune in and take a look!

(One short note on Macie Video... If you're looking for a repair shop, they're amazing. Several years ago while on a campaign trail, my Sony D600 started failing intermittently. One of their techs talked me through a repair over the phone at a diner using a butter knife and a fork.)

Nice.. I'll definitely check it out.

On a side note, I've been doing a 2 camera series for a client for almost a year now using my F5 and F3. It took a little adjusting the saturation level and Phase in the F3 but we were able to match them up quite well. Cine 4 for the F3 out to a Samurai in ProRes and Hypergamma 7 on the F5 in XAVC, both in the Cinema matrix. F3 still impresses me and the two cut together great.
