NBA Game with HVX

Hey everyone,

I just bought a HVX from a fellow user on here, Chong PAk. I do freel;ance work with the New Orleans/Oklahoma City Hornets. I took my camera with me last weekend and got some footage. It was a birthfay theme for the Hornets mascot, Hugo, so they had 8 or 9 mascots from differant NBA teams there. They had a Dunk show during the game. I was anxious to get some overcranked footage, so I shot the majority of this at 720p60 and sped some of it up to 24p in post. It turned out great!

I'm so pumped about this camera. Here's a link to the footage. Forgive the shakiness on the footage from the catwalk. I don't have a problem with heights, besides the fact that I don't like them.

And for those of you who are wondering, Yes, I do have footage of the Honeybees...

I'm still finding my sweet spot for compressing and web viewing, so some feedback would be great on how it loads, plays, looks, etc.

Thanks,

That was cool. Loved the slomo mascot jumps. The players coming in at the start looked real pro. Good stuff.

On a side note, I havn't followed the NBA in years, last I remember the Hornets were from Charlotte. Did they move the team or something?

Yeah, They moved to New Orleans. Been there for a few years. Hurricane Katrina displaced them and they have ended up in Oklahoma City for the last year and a alf. They are going back at the end of this year.

Of course, it's looking favorable that the Supersonics are going to be moving in the next couple of years. We'll see!

i liked the slow mo stuff that was real cool. you sure did manage to get in some nice spots in the arena, lol. seemed like you were front row then a the top of the dome in a few shots.

i couldnt put my finger on why the footage overall didn't seem as sharp until i read that you said:

i think the compression took away from it because those colors couldve been a lot more vibrant. did u use FCP and compressor to export this footage to quicktime?

nice shots overall though man. ;)

Yeah, I'm fortunate because I have all access to anywhere I want to be. During Time outs, I can go on the floor and get footage. i can go onto the catwalk. Really just about anywhere. It's a cool gig.

I'm tweaking my compressor settings. I rendered out a full 720HD quicktime file and then used compressor to encode it for streaming. I think its going to take some time to get it just how I want it, but right now, the tests are taking about an hour an an half to compress. I'm getting them down to about 21 megs, which means I have some room to play with. I'm shooting for roughly 10 megs per minute.

I think this is achievable. If anybody has some settings for compressor and HD footage for web uploading that they would like to share, please feel free.

And, Yes, I did a search already....

I used to be lead artist for E.A.'s NBA Live. I used to get press passes that didn't include a seat, but I could get in anywhere in the stadium. We shot stuff from way up in the catwalks where they put the manned spotlights and I spent the most of the game sitting on the floor on the endzone logo paint next to the cheerleaders shooting stills of the action...the game too.

yeah, it will be weird of the sonics move. I always think of their old logo with the Seattle Skyline. I know Bennett has been trying to get a arena built, but it looks like the city keeps shooting him down.

Some nice footage here. Have you shot any 1080 footage of the bball. really looks nice. The 720 has more options.. but just something really special with the 1080.

thanks for showing... would be sweet to get onto the court.. and get some dunks under the rim or jumping over the camera.

Yeah, I played arund with 1080i a little bit, but I just couldn't get over the 720p. It just seemed to "fit" the flow better. I don't know what it was. It just had more of a video feel to it. Hard to explain.

What about load time to watch it? Is it taking too long? Is it playing pretty smooth> Fo you think I should up the Saturation just a bit?

Thanks Guys!

720/60 rules for basketball.

Also, I know everyone's enamored of 60p overcranking, but try 36fps. It's got a beautiful slow-mo feel to it without being so S L O W that it takes forever for something to happen. I shot a number of shots at 60fps and 36fps at the Iditarod and I think that almost without exception I like the 36fps shots better... something to try out.

Thanks Barry,

I will definately try it out. That's one of the great things I have found about this camera. There are SO many differant things that you can try out!
