NASA releases partially restored Apollo 11 moonwalk video.

Funny. We culd walk on the mon in the 60s but havn't been able to do it since.
Sure was some nice effect work for back then but they forgot to move the shadow as it passes over varying surfices though. I always thought whoever set the exterior shot up of Mr Armstrong making his first step onto the moon should have gotten credit for being the first man on the moon.
lol

It's not rocket science. lol :) The camera was mounted to the lunar module and pointed at the ladder.

Happy 40th Anniversary to the Apollo 11 crew and to the thousands of people who worked on getting us to the Moon.

And I wish they could find the original of Armstrong's 1st step... If I remember correctly we are seeing footage that was taken off a TV monitor.

You are correct - this is footage of a monitor at the receiving station in Australia.

Unfortunately, they just announced today that the original tapes no longer exist. However, they did mention of them finding another copy of the actual slow-scan recording - not the original, but an immediate dub, so it's just second generation - in Australia, and that should be available in the future.

No telling when that'll be, though.

Well, *I* was kidding. But there are people out there who still cling to their faith in the whole "itza big gubberment hoax!"

I tend to side with Mythbusters on this one... that it was real... but man, there sure is a lot of stupid sh*t that fuels the conspiracy guys... so I'm left in the middle... laughing at the people who can't accept logic on either side.

I gotta' say... that this is the dumbest statement I've ever read or heard in my entire life:

"WASHINGTON (AP) — NASA could put a man on the moon but didn't have the sense to keep the original video of the live TV transmission.

In an embarrassing acknowledgment, the space agency said Thursday that it must have erased the Apollo 11 moon footage years ago so that it could reuse the videotape."

If you don't see anything wrong with that statement then you shouldn't be out on your own. That has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever heard... you accomplish what is THE pinnacle moment of all humanity (at a phenomenal cost)... and yet you gotta' clear that tape off so you can fit on more MASH reruns to save the $1.99 for another tape.

That's like going to the top of mount everest and erasing the images so you can shoot some more of your kids and dog in the back yard.

That's just plain nutty.

Yes, but c'mon... that is seriously stupid... and just wait... the conspiracy guys are gonna' love that statement.

But yeah... it's not like a lack of foresight is anything new... agent orange, bikini island, blah blah blah... still... man does that ever sound dumb... tiny specs of rocks all hermetically sealed, but hey let's re-use this original tape. Yeah... dumb as f*ck.

You'd figure the Soviet Union would be behind all the "Hoax" theories since the USA and USSR were in a VERY heated race to the Moon. But the Soviets followed the lunar mission (very closely), have looked at every bit of evidence & hoax theory (scientifically and logically), and are satisfied with the fact that the US put a man on the Moon. Not just once (which would definitely be suspect) but MANY times. Imagine trying to conduct the biggest lie of all time, ...again and again and again. Now that takes guts! Probably more guts than actually sending a man to the Moon. lol

I guess there will always be the non-believers. People who think it was all a hoax, despite easily debunked theories. I guess it's more interesting to think the government is lying to everyone on the planet than to believe we actually walked on the freaking Moon!

So far there just isn't any real evidence we didn't go to the Moon. But hoax theorists like to state so-called "facts" which they read on various conspiracy websites or from a FOX tv show they watched. Many act as if they know everything about science and geology and what conditions on the Moon must be like. Whereas, I know very little about the subject, since I've never been to the Moon and I barely passed physics class. Which is why I choose to listen to the experts in the scientific community. Much like I choose to listen to Barry Green's technical advice rather than the guy who works at Best Buy, who's trying to sell something. But I guess there are some people who like what the guy at Best Buy has to say because it's what they "want" to hear and because it supports their own beliefs.

Here's a great website which clearly debunks every hoax theory. It's written by someone who is MUCH more knowledgeable about the Moon landing than ALL of the people who conjure up the various conspiracy theories. If there's any one out there who still thinks it was all a hoax, here's the truth you've been looking for. He also provides links to websites that believe the Moon hoax theory so that you can compare and decide for yourself which makes more sense. How many hoax theorists want you to see the opposing argument? None.

He's got a few paragraphs at the end which pretty much sums up the whole hoax issue.
If you have a toothache you go to a dentist; if you have legal problems you consult a lawyer. Throughout our daily lives it is commonplace to defer to trained professionals when we require specialized treatment or consultation. If you want to know about the functionality of the Apollo spacecraft, the nature of space radiation, or lunar geology you should seek the expert opinion of the engineers, physicists, geologists, and other specialists who dedicate their careers to knowing such things. These specialists unanimously agree that the Apollo moon landings were real, yet the hoax advocates discount their opinions and characterize these professionals as NASA disinformationists

The hoax advocates like to paint the picture that they are soldiers in a war against government corruption and stand for truth and justice. However it is they who commonly employ the deceptive and manipulative tactics they accuse others of. They will typically show only the information and evidence that, on the surface, appears to substantiate their claims while suppressing any information that contradicts them. They try to conjure up feelings of distrust and antagonism toward the government. In most cases the hoax advocate's goal is to manipulate the reader, by whatever means, into agreeing with their interpretation of the facts. Encouraging a reader to study all the facts and formulate a scientifically based and unbiased opinion is generally not on their agenda

NASA is one of the more open and cooperative of all government agencies. They are typically happy to answer questions and assist in locating information. On the other hand, if you contest the findings of a hoax advocate you are likely to be greeted with evasion and, in some cases, hostility. Now which of these descriptions sound like someone with something to hide? I have seen no indication that NASA has anything to hide, but I've seen much to suggest the hoax advocates do. They have often been dishonest with us about their credentials, the availability of evidence, and their interpretation of the evidence. But why would they lie? There are some who truly believe what they say but are simply wrong due to ignorance; however, there are others who are nothing more than snake oil salesmen who's only goal is to convince the public to buy their books and videos. They disparage the reputations of dozens of astronauts and thousands of engineers and scientists for profit. These people can certainly not be trusted.

Alas virtually every society not only allows but encourages people to believe certain things as true-beyond-question, when there is very little or no evidence to underwrite the truth of those beliefs.

So you wind up with a very large number of people who have basically been raised to think that if you *want* to believe something, particularly if a large number of people *want* to believe it, then, well, it's a belief worth respecting and seriously entertaining, no matter how wacky or obviously nonsensical.

When people are raised to accept propositions without examining them critically, according to rigorous standards, sure, they'll pick and choose whatever they want to believe is true, and any specialist, expert, or individual - not to mention national and international groups of experts - who offer evidence to the contrary are "brainwashers," or "conspirators" or "those darned scientists."

does anyone see anything unusual about the reflection of the other astronaut in the visor? :2vrolijk_08:

why is this all important. i can quote Kato Kailin's every word. just get the dvds. or video tapes, or download it...good thing all that footage was kept. over and out.

The name of the guy responsible is Dick Nafzger, and he evidently is still at NASA. He said he wasn't responsible for preserving history, just making sure the stuff worked. The tapes got thrown in a giant warehouse and forgotten. Then someone grabbed them and reused them.

Which leads to this question: Would a 40 year old videotape, even a 2" tape, look that great anyway? My 3/4" tapes from video production class in the 70's would barely play the last time I tried, 10 years ago.

First, let me say that I am not a conspiracy theorist and I do believe that the moon landing did happen. It's just fairly odd in my view that they would have lost or recorded over the tapes. I'm surprised those weren't put in a safe somewhere or sent to the presidential library or Smithsonian or something.

It'd look better than second or third generatins of the same.
hence the dubbing over it.
That was no accident. Man, I'd hate to think they were as dumb as my supervisor at TNN.
lol
poor guy use to have us reuse our d-beta masters to save a buck on the lowest comodity in the business. Maybe he should go to work for NASA.
