Napoleon Dynamite

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

Yeah, I'm waiting for this one to come out locally. I'm not expecting much in terms of story, etc., but I've laughed at every trailer/commercial/promo of this flick that I've seen.

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

Finally got to see it, and I must say it was great. The entire film was filled with oddities so bizzare that you find yourself laughing sincerely over the strangest of things. I've seen so many movies lately that seemed monotonous and similar in a typical Hollywood way; Napoleon Dynamite doesn't try remotely to copy the norm, but exists in an entirely strange realm of its own. Go see it if you can find a screen it's on.

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

Napolean Dynamite is a very funny film. Although it's very stylized, the plot arc is pretty conventional-- High school nerd deals with dysfunctional family and triumphs over popular kids. Having the two main characters give totally deadpan performances was brilliant and sets the stage for Napolean's very strange world.

Sweet! ;D

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

Saw the movie before the national release. Then, saw it again afterit was released with the new ending. I did not notice the first time, but the boom mic was in every scene at least once. Not sure if they ment to do that, but how could you miss something like that. Just thought that was very wierd.

Still loved the movie. Kip was freaking hilarious.

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

I've seen it twice. I loved it. I didn't notice the mic. Think I'll have to see it a third time and look out for that.

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

I saw the mic dip down in The Village too...everyone in the theater noticed it...but when I asked everyone else who saw it at different times...they didn't see anything...its weird.

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

9 out of 10 times, a boom mic in the frame is not the fault of the filmmaker, but rather the projectionist in the theater you saw it at.

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

can you explain? b/c I was thinking that..but I don't know how projectors work...I thought it just shows the frame that was captured...does the projector crop the picture?

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

This is what I have heard, I'm certainly no projectionist.

A projectionist, is expected to crop the top, bottom, and sides of a frame and to essentially center the image on the screen. But I'm sure we have all seen the quality of many projectionist, who can barely even be bothered focusing a film (anyway I digress).

When the image is not centered correctly, you can end up with boom mikes showing up, or conversely, I have seen subtitled films where the subtitles were off the bottom of the screen.

That is why 2 people can see the same movie at different theaters (or even at the same theater - just different showings) and 1 person will say, I can't believe the boom mike was in all those shots, and the other person won't see anything at all.

Of course, with all of the above, there are still occasions where the boom mike does accidentally make it into a shot.

The movie is very one dimensional, relies too much on stylization, very low budget(and it shows), the story is very dull and predictable cinematography etc,

but it was the FUNNIEST film I have seen this year!

check it out if you want to laugh your ass off.

The Husband and Wife team did exactly what they intended to do. Make a film and have it released to the Big Screen. They sold the film for 2 million+. Not a bad chunk of change for a one dimensional movie. Just goes to show that if you have a good story and good acting, the other things that go along with film making are not noticed as much.

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

I'm not sure, right at this moment but the lowdown on this film was, the director, was a camera operator on a couple lower end films, and then made a short based on this movie, it one a bunch of awards, especially at slamdance, and then he took that short around raising about 400k give or take, and sold it to fox for 4+ mill. how much of that he got to keep? depends on the deals he did with the investors.... but as for his career I'd say it's hard for the industry to pass up on a filmmaker that can so far make 30 times the cost of the film at the theatres..... expect to see another from him...

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

the projection depends on the type of film print it is...scope or screen. scope (cinemascope) is 1:85:1...the really narrow and wide flicks. usually shot by using round prime lenses and cropping the top and bottom of the frame of film. in the theater the projectionist puts a plate in front of the film to cut off whats not supposed to be seen. a screen (widescreen) flick is anamorphic 1:78, our beloved 16:9 ratio. usually these are done with anamorphic lenses which fill the frame of film, and are projected with an anamorphic lense to stretch it back out in the booth, gives higher resolution. depends on what the filmmakers wanted to make.

take a look next time youre at the theater and see if you can see the over spill onto the black matte surrounding the screen...if u see that they did a lousy job centering etc and may have done a poor job lining up the frames or lenses. or if you see a scope film on a screen screen {16:9}(not sure what kind of pun that is) then the picture doesnt reach the edges. both annoy me to no end.

and no one knows how to focus anything anymore. or adjust the sound elements correctly.

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

Just saw this one as well...laughed my ass off. I was skeptical, but ended up loving it

Re: Napoleon Dynamite

The first time I saw it, the new ending with the wedding scene got fouled up in the projection booth, so all I saw was boom mic in the bottom half of the screen and tape marking the actor's places in the top. Saw it twice more with my daughter and laughed like I never saw it before. Very entertaining...

Vote for Pedro.
