The Nano is an external recorder that records footage onto inexpensive compactflash cards. You can use it instead of SxS cards, or in addition to SxS cards so that you have redundant recording. Additionally, the Nano can record higher-quality footage than the native SxS cards can. You can record at higher bitrates, and with higher color sampling. The EX1's native recording goes to 35mbps at 4:2:0. With the NanoFlash, you can record that exact same format, or you can record higher quality such as 50mbps at 4:2:2, or even all the way up to 280mbps.
When is it "needed"? Well, if you shoot for broadcasters who require a higher-quality format than XDCAM-EX, it might be necessary. For example, the BBC doesn't consider XDCAM-EX to be an "HD" format; they require at least 50mbps before they'll consider it "HD". If you used the NanoFlash with your EX1, you could record 50mbps 4:2:2 and therefore qualify for the BBC's definition of "HD".
You may also find it useful when doing visual FX work, or chroma keying. The higher color sampling of 4:2:2 can be very helpful in those scenarios.
Thanks Barry , I don't think I'll need 4:2:2 rate , I'm conceding the Canon FS-CF Pro Portable Compact Flash DTE Recorder , for both my EX1 and XHA1 .
will it work fine for both ? any other recent alternatives
No no no no no! That's a FireStore, and it only stores HDV video. That would be a terrible choice for the EX1. Would be fine for the XHA1, although it'd just be storing exactly the same data as what you get on the tape. But for the EX1 it would represent a big drop in video quality.
I see , the new Canon XF300 offers 4:2:2 , dose this mean upgrade is another option instead of buying nanflosh .
I think the nanoflash price is about half price of the new XF300 .
