23: Wow, very cool

24: I am still thinking it is not about the cost of the media but the ability to leave a unit recording contineously unattended and in effect have a contineous long buffer of the video. Stop at any point and you have the last X hours of footage.

27: You need to make a device with one HD-SDI input and 6 channels of audio input, which creates a single output HD-SDI signal with 8 audio channels to be fed to the nanoFlash, now that would be great as now my camera 8 channels of audio! Or does this device already exist?

33f: Ultra II 15MBps gives about 80Mbps which is very usable and much cheaper than CF (for 50Mbps 4:2:2), I'd love to option as we all have so much SDHC now.... (still need CF for 100Mbps though I guess unless Extreme III was used). Maybe jump ahead and investigate SDXC as this is probably the flash memory format of choice when nanoFlash2 is being released ;-)

36: This is a very important feature to add.

65: I use this feature on my camera as it can save a lot of work in post sorting through clips deleting them. If you know a take is bad, delete it there and then, no wasting time later on. Maybe consider the concept of a recycle bin as a safe delete.

You missed one:

114: How cool is the nanaFlash
VERY.

Nano flash looks like a great idea and im very interested, but after I sent an email to convergent they forwarded it to their Australian distributors, the Aussie ditributors then emailed me, and after checking out the Aussie distributors website I wont be buying anything from them given that the Aussie distributors price on the Flash XDR is more than $2000 (or about 25%) above the USA retail price.

They will claim that the higher price is due to shipping and supply blah blah blah. I can fly on a 'round the world' ticket to the USA and get one when they become available and still have enough change to holiday for 3 weeks... Aussie distributors attempt to screw the consumer at every turn, middle finger to them!!

23: Yes, we've heard lots of request for the pre-record buffer, it's definitely in the plans.

24: Regarding the ability to continuously record and over-write the oldest footage, we agree this is a great feature. It's more difficult to implement in a variable frame size CODEC, such as MPEG2, compared to DVCProHD which has a fixed frame size. Maybe we could compromise by only erasing the data on the next CF card just as we are about to fill up the current card. So worst case you always have the footage from at least one card and possibly as much as 2 cards, depending on when you stop the recording.

27. I know AJA has a 4-channel audio embedder, which should allow you to add 4 new channels to the audio from the EX1/3. That will get you 6-channels alltogether. I would bet that 6-channel audio embedders are also available, but I need to research.

33. In the US the 16GB SDHC Ultra II and the 16GB Trasncend 133X 16GB CF are basically the same price (within a few dollars). I realize that prices do vary considerable around the world. I can say we are constanly monitoring the prices and capacities of all solid-state media, but don't have any immediate plans to move away from Compact Flash.

36. We are in 100% agreement, hot-swap is a critical feature. We plan to add by the time the nanoFlash ships.

65. Yes, deleting the last clip would be a nice feature. This is not such a big concern for the Flash XDR whch has 4 CF slots, but is much more important on the 2-CF slot nanoFlash. I will discuss with our software developer.

114. Never thought about this question, will add to the next FAQ release!

This is my concern too. I too an in Australia and while I have recieved the notification from CD about being forwarded on to New Media I havn't recieved any info from them yet.

I have to assume NM buy from CD at a reduced price, ie the wholesale price, which allows them to sell at RRP for full margin or lower to be more competative in the global market. Their margin should not be above and beyond that RRP other than perhaps $100 per unit for import costs, and of course local taxs as well.

The RRP is listed at US$3000 is it not? I already see the XDR on B&H for US$500 less than its RRP of US$5000 which makes B&H likely standard list price about US$2700 for the nano (10% off full list).

Now lets take off an extra 10% for the -pre-order discount and we should be hitting around US$2400 or less (not actually sure what the real offer it in the US but surely it is 10% off what will just be street price?

US$2400 is AU$3750, add $100 for import overheads per unit (about what it would cost to ship from B&H & clear local customs on an individual basis) makes it AU$3850 ex GST.

So what did they quote you Rob?

No quote yet mate but we've all danced this same dance before, we know it will be much cheaper privately importing it rather than dealing with a distributor, I have no problem whatsoever dealing with B&H and the like... If I can avoid the shafting from any Aussie distributor I will.

Just a guess, but I think the price from an Aussie distributor will be around $6000 AUD based on the $3000 US RRP.

Just to be clear, the US list price for the Flash XDR is $4,995.00.

B&H sells the Flash XDR for $4,799.95, which is a discount of 4%, not 10%.

US Prices typically do not include taxes while Australian prices do.

Also, the exchange rate, duties, taxes and shipping all have to be part of the equation.

Hi There,

Just wanted to add some comments in here as New Magic Australia P/L are the authorized master distributor for Convergent Design within the Australia, New Zealand and Pacific Island region.

Firstly can I say we have NOT set Australian pricing for the nanoFLASH, so any mention of a AU price is mere speculation. We will set Australian pricing including the "introductory" pricing next week (this is also what was emailed to ANYONE that has placed a pre order for this region). It will NOT be DOUBLE of the USA RRP (unless the Australian dollar takes a further turn for the worse).

Some notes:
- New Magic Australia P/L is a distributor, we DO NOT sell direct to the public.
- New Media is a reseller (different company).
- Australian RRP prices include TAX (GST).
- USA RRP prices do not include the additional TAX(es) that are payable at point of sale.

New Magic Australia prides itself with the best level of technical support (post and pre sales), National Marketing of our products (in print and trade events) and importantly "stocking" the products we represent so our resellers can have stock same day/next day. The USA RRP (EX TAX) for the FlashXDR is $4995, here in Australia we have set the retail at $9266 (including TAX). Most resellers DO NOT sell at RRP so you will see cheaper prices from Australian resellers, if you look around you will find Oz resellers with keen prices.

Kind Regards,

Sorry my bad, was going from a glance at the price a few days ago. However you will notice in my calculations I specified ex GST which means that price exclused sales tax.

I also think the nano is list $3500, not $3000 I used, but the process won't vary. Recalculating from these new figures gives:

RRP$3500 -> Street US$3360 + US$100 shipping/customs clearance = US$3460 = AU$5250 ex GST. less introductory pre order special price (AU$4995?ex GST)

If I could buy a XDR from B&H landed to the door in about 3 days for AU$8420 inc GST why would I spend $8999 (VideoGuys, AU$579 more) to buy it locally? That is only extra profit on top of the standard & often quite generous profit built into a RRP going to the distributor/reseller. And local business's wonder why so many of us grey market import. Are you saying B&H arn't offering quality sales and support services & marketing? I know lots of people who would dissagree with that.

AU$579 buys me lots of CF...

With the way things are bought easily from the internet now I think distributors need to sharpen their collective pencils or face the reality of more and more individuals buying products overseas at a great saving.

If the prices were close (within 2-3%) I would consider buying from Australia, but frankly it shouldnt be me paying if you want to advertise in trade mags (I dont read them), or hold stock (I only want one) or offer post sales service (I can get the same from the USA).

Cheers
