Naming your Company

Ok so I am brainstorming names for my production company and was wondering if you have a company, how did you go about picking and thinking of your name? What is your prod. company name, if you wanna include it too. Thanks.

This is kinda like asking someone what you should name your dog! Our is easy - it simply describes what we do.

my production company name is ZFarms Productions. it didn't take long to come up with it. ZFarms is the farm my dad and I have run since I was a little kid, so I thought "oh! i'm gonna call my production company that as homage to my dad and I's farm".

Sabi Pictures

literally, Sabi (as in Wabi-Sabi) is the japanese word for rust, but is used to describe anything that is evidence of, or captures, the passing of time. as defined by Andrei Tarkovsky in his book, Sculpting in Time...

"It is considered that time per se, helps to make known the essence of things. The Japanese therefore see a particular charm in the evidence of old age. They are attracted to the darkened tone of an old tree, the ruggedness of a stone, or even the scruffy look of a picture whose edges have been handled by a great many people. To all these signs of age, they give the name sabi, which literally means ‘rust’. Sabi, then, is a natural rustiness, the charm of olden days, the stamp of time. Sabi, as an element of beauty, embodies the link between art and nature."

I chose this word because it both alludes to the temporal nature of cinema while embodying the spirit and aesthetic I aspire to in my filmmaking -- truth, beauty, minimalism, etc.

That should not be as funny as it is. :cheesy:

I'm going through the whole "come up with a name" thing myself. It seems like every name I've come up with is already a production company somewhere in the world.

here are your options...
to brand> an original name... like google

to decribe your services> somthing, somthing films or production or media

to sound established> like... true light motion pictures ( i just made that up you can have that if you want) sounds established though right?? thats because there are alot of true light this and true light that... but no true light productions or whatever..

significance> a name that means somthing to you... like our friend ZFarms however... i feel the proof is in the pudding!!! build a dependable bridge and they will cross.

One think to remember is: if you want to create a web site too, first search for the domain and then name your company.

(What's up with the quick reply button? Weird)

Be careful to just search on Google though. There are people who will track for those 'unfound' searches, then quickly buy up that name and then you can pay them big money to buy the domain from them.

I'd try to think of something away from the obvious and too literally taken (like terms that refer to our business or equipment). Try to think of a total concept, not just a name. That way you can use your name easily for promotion on your website and maybe later on for other communication/advertising. What is the message you want to get across? What is it that sets you apart from others? Try to think of a name and a pay-off (slogan) together that compliment each other. Your name can be total crap, however maybe your slogan might explain what it is that you do or what makes you so special. Use everyday situations to think of this, just the way you would do on writing a script. And don't be in a hurry with it :) Good luck!

ok so I've been brainstorming and came up with this:

Shadow Minds Entertainment (when you really think about it, it doesn't make too much sense, but it sounds cool).

What do you think. Yea, I'm still brainstorming.

I immediately misread it as "Shallow Minds" which might be a bit of a problem (or not, depending on your market!).

It all depends on what you want to do, I guess. If you want to do corporate work, promos, anything like that, I think it's a terrible name. If you just want to make your own films, then who cares what your name is? It could be total nonsense, it doesn't matter.

Our name actually came out of a skit we had written and never used. At the time it was the only thing we could all agree on. Now, years later, we get nothing but compliments on it, and it serves our commercial purposes just as well as our artistic ones.

mine was given to me by a chinese priest so ..
Binary Studio
Binary =it is the ying yang; a balance of good and evil. i basically make films of those nature. pain and pleasure, hate and love etc.

I chose Component Pictures because (at the time) it was the best way to view my work on a TV screen. However, HDMI Pictures doesn't have the same ring to it.

Hmm, but that's not really what binary means anymore, is it? You're sort of stuck with a computers/technology interpretation.

"Laundry Day Productions" - Laundry Day is the most vulnerable time in a persons life. All their good clothes are in the washing machine so they are stuck wearing the worst clothes they own. I named my production company that because I like that we all have a Laundry Day and are vulnerable at times. It reminds us we're all human. Ok, that and because I already owned the domain name, laundryday.com .
