FS7: Naming QXD Card in the camera? Automatically naming?

Hello,

When you format a card in the camera, it is automatically named "untitled." Clearly you can rename the card in your computer, but I'm just wondering if there's a better way to do it in the camera automatically.

I have a shoot coming up where I'll be swapping cards and reformatting them often and was hoping to avoid this step on the computer.

Thanks!

Tim

What's your favorite workflow for revolving through cards, then? Name, shoot, transfer (using shotput or hedge), delete all clips, repeat?

I ingest all files via FCPX to my media folder and then I immediately create an archive on an external hard drive in the import window. FCPX allows you to name the archive individually.

Nope. Can't be done on any Sony camera.

Doug,

I feel like somewhere I read that you delete clips so that you don't have to lose the name of the card. Is that true? If so, do you do it with the finder and simply delete the XDROOT folder, or do you do it with some other method?

Thanks!

Tim

I actually wrote a detailed post of this thread yesterday and then Firefox crashed when I submitted it, so I was just going to move on. But since you asked, I'll give an abbreviated answer. Yes, with previous cameras I used to give my cards custom names and then use Content Browser to "Delete All Clips" after ingest instead of reformatting. This cleared the card, but left the custom card name and any scene files, etc. that were stored on them intact. In fact, I had cards that had never been reformatted for several years.

But today we are forced to use Catalyst Browse -- which I am definitely not a fan of how it works. Plus our scene files, etc. are stored on utility SD cards now so reformatting the XQD and SxS cards is not as much of an issue. So I no longer expend any effort naming the cards. I just let them all be "untitled". Of course, the cards have physical labels on them and I still take full advantage of the on-board custom clip naming system to ensure I can identify the shoot they belong to (great for long-term archive management) and so that I never get duplicate names. And I also ingest footage into nested folders suchs as: HDD > Project XYZ > Day 1 > SxS Card 1.

Thanks, Doug! I really appreciate the insight. That will save me a good deal of effort and allow me to concentrate on backing up my footage to multiple locations without getting stuck in the weeds of naming cards.

Thanks,

Tim

The latest version of SPP has a new feature that has changed how I deal with card names/numbers when down loading .. you can type in a down load id.. eg card_1 ,card_2... and SPP will name the download folder same as the id name/number.. cut one step out of the down load process.. just make a folder for the day in your HDD,s.. then set the pre set for that day.. then just type in the card number in the down load iD window each time..
