Name your 3 TOP film directors

Spidey, let us know when you create a wonderful movie experience like STAR WARS. I couldn't find you on IMDB for some reason? Will you screening your latest work in your 200 square foot "Skywalker Ranch" in Hong Kong? At least back up your statement with an intelligent comment or counter with something you've shot to show us why "lucas is a loser". Post again when you turn 16 years old. Sheesh.

If Lucas is a loser, I aspire to be just 10% of the loser he is, fully realizing a modern day mythology and touching 2 generations with it!

Personally I think Lucas is a director and a loser...Why?

He directed some films, but won't move on!! Please, give us something fresh!! Not just Star Wars 3D cash in!! Prequels I can cope with, but 3D!! FFS!

I am not saying I am better, but I think he is a poor director too. Clock hand wipe anyone?

He is a genius at creative producing! That is why he is a multi-billionaire.

I think Coltrain is free to express his love of religion in his film, but to try and force that definition on other people is ridiculous. We all have different definitions, and to try and judge other people's definitions is just going to rile people up.

And it's definitely your approach that's getting to people Coltrain. You may not be aware of it...

Actually, I'm pretty sure he's aware of it. And that's the thing that bothers me most.

He is yearning for some sort of attention. DON'T GIVE IT TO HIM.

Lucas is the reason we have non linear editing desktop tools, THX sound, and why the industry is moving towards digital and us grassroots filmmakers have access to digital tools. He's done some amazing directing work but may be remembered more for the technical innovations he's engineered and pushed for. If you think he's a loser seriously read up on his background. Calling him a loser is a disgruntled fanboys opinion of him.

All credit to Lucas to everything he has done...

I just think that if he wants to be considered a good film director, he would direct something new to prove it. I haven't been very impressed by any of his actual directing. The Star Wars concept was brilliant but IMHO the best films came when he handed over the reigns.... and he has a really annoying wobbly chin.

I was only really calling him a "loser" in jest.

I don't know, but I think that "American Graffiti" was a pretty good movie.

I had heard AG was good and watched it a few weeks back. I got bored and turned it off...

... maybe I am just impatient but it didn't do anything for me at all. It might also because it is about US culture and I am a brit.

All props to George but he ain't done nothin' since JEDI; and no INDIANA JONES doesn't count. Sides; Raider's is the only Super Cool Indy, Temple is fun but LAST CRUSADE is outright insulting to Cinema and the franchise.

Lucas is epic when it comes to THX, American Grafitti and the original SW films but since then? Nada worth mentioning in my book. IF this SW 3D is true then is indeed a loer; move on George.

I saw him say it in interview first hand, something like:

Interviewer: "So George, what's next"

GL (sounding like Kermit the frog, as ever): "Well I have plans..." everyone holds their breath..." I am going back and and remastering Star Wars into 3D, its really exciting"

...No George, its not! Buy a new shirt and get some lypo on that chubby chin!

dude he stole the concept to make star wars and it's nothing but dribble in the first place. i mean come on. plus hes a loser. and his idea was wack. star wars 3d is a retarded ideas. no vision of anything new and refreshing. plus crazy czech did i offend you? go back watch your shallowed depth episode 3 and vase in the glory of a huge pile of crap. he sucks. i mean jar jar binks? uh saying his film is titanic of the stars? i mean a comparsion to one piece of crap to your own is crappy within it self. but i dont like star wars. now exscue me as i go watch kurosawa films something that was impatful and beautiful. not white trash ewok films. go watch episode I : NASCAR of the Stars. and tell me you love crap.

and thats REAL!

Yeah, it would help if you are from the USofA... It is an interesting movie to listen to with head phones on... it has a great sound mix.

Alright Spidey and Crazyczech

We are having a spirited discussion here; let's have fun with it. Hell, even Coltrain and I can agree to disagree; kind of.

Spidey? You don't at least like SW and Empire?

I like Kurasawa; my little half-brother recently hooked me up with AKIRA KURASAWA FOUR SAMURAI CLASSICS. It has Seven Samurai, The Hidden Fortress, Yojimbo and Sanjuro. I'm pretty stoked on it and need to make time to watch them.

Today; I picked up The Color Purple 2 Disc Special Edition, Oughta be cool to study up.

Anyway; see how I just changed the tension subject?

There are alot of embittered people out there who will try to take everything away from Lucas because the Prequels were dissapointing.

But who can deny how they felt when they first saw STAR WARS, how incredibly awesome EMPIRE is, how great the ending to JEDI is (as a whole JEDI is not nearly as great as EMPIRE IMO), how awesome Raiders is, I saw these when I was a kid and it ignited my passion for film like nothing else.

The prequels are heavily flawed, but they do have moments...

And if you have seen THX1138 and AG, I don't see how you can honestly say he is such a 'horrible' director.

He's always been a more 'technically, fix it in post' type of filmmaker, and for this reason he has given us revolutionary technical innovations as Isaac Brody mentioned.

On top of that, he HAS done it on his own terms, outside of Hollywood, which is another thing I admire.

Sure, EMPIRE and JEDI he didn't direct himself, and they were great, but so is A NEW HOPE. And just because the prequels were overall very lacking, doesn't make him a loser. That's just absurdly juvenile.

Also, I haven't heard about this remastering in 3D thing, I heard he was going to make more experimental visual films, and specifically produce a film about the Tuskegee (spelling) Airmen, african-american WWII pilots, or something like that...

Did Ben Burtt do the sound design for AG?

I said LOSER but I use that lightly; no not at all a loser. Maybe a disapointment? Like Cameron almost (Since Titanic what the **** have you been doing dude?) I have heard the 3D thing and am trippin.

IMDB has him currently writing characters and universe for 2 SW TV SERIES for 2006. Thats kind of what I mean; dude; let it go. Next its a TV series, and then a 3D verion, and then a THEME RIDE. Let if Go man.

No, but Walter Murch is credited as "sound montage" and "sound re-recordist".

"Apocalypse Now" is another film that I love to watch with headphones. (Murch did the sound).

A book I just read talks about Murch's sound design on Apocalypse Now. I think it was 'Total Directing'...

I'll have to check those out again on headphones. I want to mix DEATH OF SEASONS on headphones, but I'm not sure how accurate that will be... I love adding dense soundscapes full of subtle elements, but those things are often lost on less then ideal listening environments.

Anyways.... I know what you mean, John... I'm very skeptical about an SW TV series, I'm still sort of in denial, or just can't believe, that it actually is going to happen... he needs to be careful or the same thing that happened to Star Trek will happen to SW... He kept saying the prequels were going to be it... He's said that you're free to experiment more on a TV series, so we'll see... I really can't believe SW is going to be a TV series, just don't know what to think about that... I hope he allows others to direct a few episodes, lol. I even think the Clone Wars deal on Cartoon Network, though it was well done, just cheapened Star Wars for me. Imagine if Lucas did the SW series with HBO, now that could be interesting.

I especially agree on Cameron, it's like he just retired after Titanic, c'mon, do something! BATTLE ANGEL ALITA, if he REALLY is going to direct it, I'm sure will totally own us all. But I wish he would hurry up and do it.

empire is good but the director and the cowriters helped. i mean re writes are a good thing. coppala begged lucas to use his rewriter for episode 3 but lucas replied that it was epic and tragic enough. Tragic....indeed. Kurosawa also made Kagemusha and Ran. I like eveything about kurosawa the mans movies have been ripped and pulled to make other films such as the man withno name seies from sergio leone, aso one of my favorite directors at least when he took the idea of yojimbo he gave it something more as a western film the must lack of dialouge but the visual of characters. ALSo his shots amazing. pacing and timing and music. I mean Once Upon A Time In The West was like 165mins long and its only 15 page script the rest was storyboards. So he brought kurosawa right. Starwars is lacking alot in areas. making the prequels what killed the series Empire is the only film i know. keep you ewoks. cause if you watch the old star wars now you know darth vader is no longer the most power man in the universe, but the biggest ***** in the universe.

Also I love kurosawa out side of the samurai films but he deifined it. i dont need lucas in my life to define my film making career. only masters to help me realize what makes sense.

So im out and thats real. plus im not offending anyone just answering a question :-p john you still thank those film still have something that speaks to you?

*leaves and goes watch a chan woo park film.*

Well said and I have to admit that Star Wars does not mean what it used to me; this isn;t an age thing as I still am in love with Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Road Warrior, The Thing and boat's of other films.

JEDI was the beginning of the collapse for me with Star Wars; The Ewoks and Han being a ***** for starters but I could dig it as it was the end. Lucas' bastardizing of the original series with new technology has killed it; the fake joke Jabba the Hutt, the silly robot's and Jawas falling off their space skooters? What the hell?

Anyway; yeah; SW and LUcas lost me long ago; Attack of the Clones (Star Wars 4?) just sealed it it stone. It was over the second Jar Jar Binks showed up.

I have this all before anyway but what really concerns me is the new INDY 4. Im ny opinion they ****ed up INDY with Part 3 but I am afraid of what 4 is going to be

.

I don't know if I would do a final mix with headphones, you'd lose the audio perspective. However, watching ficks with headphones is a great learning experience.

My choices to get a great sound experienc with headphones, is American Graffiti, Apocolypse Now and the Willam Friedkin movie Cruising, with Al Pacino. It is a rough film, but the sound mix is amazing. It is the opposite of a dense sound track. Friedkin pull almost everything but dialog and choice sound effects. It is the creepiest sound track I have ever heard.
