Name your 3 TOP film directors

I read blurbs from Tarkovsky's like the one posted and this is exactly what I am talking about; it's as if Spielberg should be ashamed for being the most successful storyteller in the history of Cinema.

I have no doubt in my mind Steve has made a majority of his films for money, for the studio; but let's not discredit the man's passion for cinema. That goes for M Bay now that i think about it. Who the flock are we (and especially Tarkovsky) to judge who is an artist and who is not? There are many perople that think Cinema is not art; that only music, literature and canvas are true art. Are they right and we are wrong?

Is an Artist a sell-out the minute he is represented and his work is exhibited? Is being commissioned for an exhibition an indication of failing in art? This belief is absurd; and this is what Tarkovsky (and Coltrain for that matter) are saying.

It reminds me of music lovers who like a band but then one day they make that one album that makes them famous and suddenly they are sell-outs; which is absurd.

D_and_G says it nicely for me:

and maybe if he could see beyond his narrow view of the world and art, we'd have something to talk about.

This is the discriminating view I keep referring to. This is the the exact mindframe and view that inhibits art. Is it a better film if it plays to no one and does not make a dime? Apparently. I know Coltrain; to be be 100% pure you should make a films and hide them in a vault so know one can ever see them. This way; you have made it for yourself and not anyone else; staying pure. (of course I am exaggerating)

Tarkovsky has just got to be pissed off for working under Russian rule his entire life. He made 12 films in his career according to the IMDB and all but one was made outside of 'Studio Russia'. You can blatantly see the bitterness and negativity stemming from this iron fist that held him thougout his fimmaking journey.

Anytime you start mixing politics and/or religion (appears to be both with Tarkovsky) into Art it's a bad idea.

Then it is no longer Art; it's an agenda. (Damn; I should copywrite that)

Remember that Coltrain.

Art should be used to serve something greater than yourself. (I feel no need to copyright that, it is free for you all to use)

Remember that Mr. Hudson.

Well said John. Now let's all focus our energy on making our own films and contributing to Art by our own definition (whatever that may be). Coltrain, I hope to get an invite to the premiere of your first film, be it in a garage, a vault or where ever. I would like to get off the merry-go-round of mind-numbing 'definitional' arguement and get back to creating...(even though it has been fun logging on to see the next retort!) Best of luck to everyone and don't suck me back in to befoul anyone...I have a new monkey-arm technique I've been sitting on. It's been real.

OK Coltrain piped up before I posted my soothing denouement. ****. "Art should be used to serve something greater than yourself" is the most asinine thinnly-veiled religious reference ever. Art can be what a 2-year-old paints with poo on a placemat. Art doesn't "serve" anyone but the Artist. Creating Art can be therapy, relaxing, painful, erotic, gut-wrenching, mind-blowing, cathartic, exploratory, exploitive, glorious...etc. Coltrain, you are a confused young mind. Stop living in such a confined state of mind. Peace.

Totally agree.

And saying "Remember that..." doesn't make it cool; my sound bite rocked.

Art is for me; by me. If other people dig it that's wonderful; if I can make a living doing it; thats even better. I'm not into Art for anything other than ME.

Art should be used to serve something greater than yourself.

Spielberg does exactly that, he's an entertainer, and he has a very good pulse on what will thrill and captivate an audience. A lot of filmmakers serve themselves, including so called artists that Coltrain is so quick to embrace. Truffaut had a lot of respect for Hitchcock and Spielberg because both Hitchcock and Spielberg are/were able to work within the studio system to create works that are unique, entertaining, artful, and represent their distinct signatures.

I like Tarkovsky's work, I remember seeing Stalker for the first time and being blown away by the psychological camera movement. And then I watched even more, was impressed with technique, but I find a lot of his work to be very cold. It's internal, autobiographical, and very removed from the viewer. Is it better than Spielberg's stuff? I don't think so.

Art is totally subjective, we all experience it differently. To read pretentious film quotes taken out of context isn't original, it's annoying. I like discussion, not random Coltrain judgments on what is and isn't art.

I think that it is funny that if you look at interviews with any of the old school directors (or other creatives) nobody talks about art. Almost to a man, they all considered what they did was a craft. I think that we should make sure that we have mastered the craft before we even think about art.

I disagree with everything that was said after my post.

I think we knew that already. I think it's pretty much a given that most people tend to agree with themselves. It's called having an opinion. Doesn't mean that it's right, but it's yours. :)

Of course, you know what they say about opinions....?

"Do not conform any longer to the patterns of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is - his good, pleasing and perfect will.
Romans 12:2"

Interesting, I like your signature... so you are religious? I guess that you haven't gotten to the evil of pride part of the bible yet...what a pity.

The Bible was written by aliens to cloud the minds of men. Anything anyone else says I disagree with. God made Adam and Eve out of dirt. That's much more plausible than evolution. Noah's Ark was WAY to small to hold two of every freakin' creature ever. Buddha has a big belly. Jesus did have a wicked beard though. Vodka tastes good. David Copperfield is corny. It's too hot in my room. My middle toe is longer than my big toe. This thread is more infuriating then doing a Rubik's cube in the dark.

Coltrain, let me help you out, as someone who feels the same about art being a spiritual thing and can even be a calling from God: I spent years trying to express my feelings about spiritual matters in an environment that could be considered hostile. I learned that if you want to express your views it's not what you say but how you say it. Now, posting statements on this forum is not what I would consider "life threatening" but the same principle applies. You're opinions are not what's offending others here or making them "against you" it's the way you are saying them. No one likes others to make them feel small, and you're talking like you're better then everyone. Although this may be true, no one will ever listen if you talk to them this way. You started a cool thread here, but it seems the purpose was to show how smart and prestigious you are in your preferences. Comes off a bit condescending. I might not be as smart as you, but I do know when I'm being talked down to, and I don't like it all that much. So, take this how you want, but try to put yourself on the same level as everyone else here ('cause we're all the same, I mean, if you were Spielberg, would you post every other day [0.58 posts per day], probably not.)

Now that that's out of the way, I am mad no one made any comments to my list of directors. I spent a long time trying to make it the most ridiculous list I could. Here it is again:

Howard Storm - Perfect Strangers, ALF and Mr. Belvedere.

Mark A.Z. Dippé - Spawn, Halloweentown III: Halloweentown High, Frankenfish.

Ted Nicolaou - Spellbreaker: Secret of the Leprechauns, Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm, Dragonworld: The Legend Continues.

No offence Coltrain, but these three are the "most perfect filmmaker(s) who ever lived."

Joe

Peace!

I'm not against you Coltrain. Please don't slip into defensive/paranoia mode. No one is ganging up on you. Peolple are expressing their views. "If you can't stand the heat..."

It's what I've said and who I am that makes people against me.

And I can take it, that's why I'm still here.

If I seem condescending, I'm sorry, but I don't think I have said anything that should get everyone all riled up.
