Name your 3 TOP film directors

I tend to agree that there is a fine, confusing line between art and entertainment and it would be very hard to distinguish between the two in many cases.

So, I don't think any of us could really say which films are entertainment or art, or both.

Who knows?

I've somewhat tried to do it and maybe have failed.

WHOA, I think that's a Coltrain version of "IMO", we've had a break through

Welcome to the love Col-brother

(Just giving you a hard time in pure jest man, you're an interesting and sometimes misunderstood DVX user for sure)

Yup.

It's not the new frontiers that matter, but the fresh eyes we see them with.

This debate reminds me of a quote from Hemingway. I had decided to read "The Brothers Karamazov" by Dostoevsky. Afterward I came across Hemingway's quote which completely echoed my own sentiments : (paraphrasing) " He writes so poorly, but he makes you feel so much" !

An open heart and mind is so much more important for an artist, than petty preconceived notions. IMO, If you can tell me why Monet is better than Pollock, or Tarkovsky better than Welles then you're succumbing to academic polyglot.
And you'll be missing the very marrow on which creation depends.

Cheers:)

Vastly Overrated:

Shymalan (One Trick Pony)
Turentino (the Lenny Kravitz of Film)
Lucas (Last good one was 30 years ago)
Brent Ratner (convinced he's a genius and disproves it everytime out)

I love mostly everyone else. Wasted talent is my biggest complaint.

Does everyone hate Ratner?? Everyone seems to.

I think Red Dragon is really good! I also like Rush Hour for what it is... although the outtakes are the best bit.

I found Red Dragon really sinister and suspenseful. I also thought that Ed Norton was excellent in it, as ever. The scenes when he goes to the murder scenes, following the blood trails etc are ace IMO.

Tarantino overrated; gasp! I agree with the others though; I had to look up Ratner; I was like "Who?"

I don't mean to speak for D_and_G (So D_and_G if I am incorrect let me know). I believe what he was implying with the 'Orthodoxy' take is not from a religious context but more along the general definition in "...Adhering to what is commonly accepted, customary, or traditional." in your general views of cinema and art and the all encompassing guidelines that separate them.

You stated that a film cannot be art if made for 'entertainment' first for example. (I paraphrase what I gathered out of it).

I'm guessing your strict views of what is construed as art falls under the 'tunnel vision' approach to filmmaking and it's when we have strict guidlines, rules and parameters that any chance at art suffers; it's rebelling against these structures that inevitabaly will reward us.

What a mind bender. (Need a smoke)

mmm, please, please, please watch "Man Hunter". Not that I like M Mann at all but I've always thought that Red Dragon was a horrible remake imo.

I have seen it. Thought it was very good! ...but I preferred Silence and red dragon.

I really like Michael Mann. Think he is probably in my top ten for understanding the construction of a film: End of Last of the Mohicans, Collateral, but bottom ten for knowing when something is just a little dull: Ali, Insider, Heat (sorry guys)etc.

Gotcha

I've just never been able to take Michael Mann seriously after Miami Vice and Man Hunter was his redemption for me. I know that's ignorant but it's a hang up I have with him.

Simply, Art is anything that gets a reaction, good or bad.

I got this video with two chicks in school girl uniforms.... talk about a reaction....

... I may not know art, but I know what I like!

Do you know what I really hate? The Lucas style. When all the scenes are recorded in a blue-box studio. I am not saying that I hate blue-box, digital effects and technologies, because I also use them. But not for a whole film. And I hate that the background is drawn. There are also films that use BBox: Matrix 2-->several shots of the highway scene was shot in a studio but the background is not an animation or a "cartoon". The background was also recorded, and that is the difference, it is real!(or the real is modified)
