Name Preference

I have a weird situation before me... I was born "Jon Ruppert Barber", but my parents never intended to call me "Jon". I was named Jon after my father. From the get-go, the planned to call me "Jake". I've had to struggle with the name difference all 18 years of my life: do I put "Jake" on this test or "Jon"? I've accidentely written the name Jake when buying airplane tickets, and gotten a puzzled look from airport security when they saw "Jon" on my ID.

Now I'm about to leave for college, and I figure this would be the best time to do something about my name. I could easily just go by "Jon" and problem would be solved. But many people around me say that "Jon" is too boring and would make it harder for me to get a job. Since none of you know me, I figured you could be my best judge.

I want to eventually become a film editor. Without knowing anything about any of the candidates, which name would you feel most comfortable hiring as an editor for your film: Jon, Jake, or Ruppert?

Thanks for your imput!

Jon for rodeo movies, Jake for skateboard movies, Ruppert for movies about a new Space Shuttle.

I don't like Ruppert, but I could go either way with the others. They both fit with your last name fine. Jon is a bit more bland, Jake has a harsh 'k' sound and comes off as a stronger word. Jon is more comfortable, but be prepared to see it spelled consistently by others as John.

Since they are equally good in my mind, I also say it only matters what you think works best.

Also remember that your "editor" name doesn't have to be your legal one. If you're thinking of changing it, just my off the top of my head, I'd change it to Jake and be done with it. Personally I dig Jake more than Jon. However, if I were hiring an editor, Ruppert has just enough of that pretentious artistic flair to be interesting.

I'd say change it to Jake and make your life easier, and then make your "pen name" Jake or Ruppert.

My opinion. Your name is your personal identity and who you are. You should pick it based on your personal identity and who you are, not based on what sounds good as an editor. In the first place, someone is going to hire you because of your talent, not because they like the way one name sounds over the other. (can you imagine... "man, that Jon is a great editor... but Ruppert, that name is just so... good... I mean his work sucks, but the name just rolls of my tongue... lets go with him!")

Anyway. You go by Jake, you like Jake, everyone knows you as Jake. Just legally change your first name to Jake :) Plus, I personally (and objectively) think it sounds the best out of all of those, so it's a win-win, at least in my eyes :)

Well, if the name John is not so overwhelmingly boring that the entire country would vote in no less than 4 presidents with that name...you have nothing to worry about.

Hey could be worse. You could be named Lewis "Scooter" Libby. And he was a direct assistant to the president.

Sheesh. I must be feeling 'political' today.

I personally don't hire people with names that start with a "J" an "L" or an "X".

(Obviously just kidding)

But chose the name you are comfortable with. Easy as that. At least your name isn't "*".

Because that would be quite annoying, yet it would be a good editing name.

Wow! Thanks for all the input! Obviously I wouldn't expect someone to hire me/not hire me because of my name, but whether we like to admit it or not, we read books by their covers. Personally, it doesn't matter much to me. Changing a name is a very difficult and time consuming process, and I'd rather not do it unless it was absolutely necessary. I was just curious if people saw a big difference between the names.

I'd worry about something important...like learning how to be the best editor you can be...building a network...enjoying college girls...finding a mentor in the business, etc.

The rest will take care of itself!

Best of luck,

Lol, thanks J3oe. Obviously this stuff is important, and I plan to give it MUCH more time and attention than my name. The point of this thread is that I'm at a point in my life where I can do mulitple things with my name, and start building my reputation. So I thought I would get everyones opinion on the matter.

Ruppert is better than Englebert or Dweezel or Moon Unit. And I knew a couple who couldn't decide on a name so they called their daughter BG for Baby Girl. At least your folks didn't name you Garber.

My parents almost named me Richard; since both my father and grandfather are named Richard that would have made me Richard the Third. Grandpa talked my parents out of it, he thought that the Shakespearean connotations connected with Richard III would be a bit weird.
