Nab???

Has anyone been to NAB before? If so besides attending an event that has all the new "toys" what is it like? Is it super crowded there? I am thinking of going this year to check it out...

More people come to the NAB convention than live in the entire cities and counties! The population of Vegas swells by about 200,000 when NAB is in town. Hotel room rates will be exorbitant, cabs will be impossible to get, and cell phone reception gets spotty because there are so many people in town that they frequently overload the system. The convention center will be packed to the gills with every business that has anything to do with film, television, or radio, whether broadcasting or editing or lights or recording technologies or animated backgrounds or -- well, you name it. It's, as Ed Sullivan would say, a "really big shoe."

Actually, as a first-time attendee of NAB last year, as well as a first-time visitor to Vegas . . .

The horror stories (cell reception, cab availiability, three-hour waits at restaurants, etc., etc.) turned out to be ENTIRELY unfounded.

Not once did I have a problem with the phone. I never had to wait more than a few minutes for a cab -- and the monorail or my own two feet sufficed most of the time. Restaurant waits were no more lengthy than they are in other major metropolitan areas . . .

Now, as for the hotels, I can't say, because that was taken care of for me. But the rest of it? No sweat, to be honest.

Just wear GOOD shoes.

Now, what drove me up walls was the constant, onmipresent, oppressive card-snapping of armies of people trying to give you cards for stripper services. It was everywhere, en masse, 24 hours a day.

NAB rocks! I went a two years ago with a couple other guys, and I learned a lot. I sat in on a lot of the Post-production workshops. The new stuff they have there is incredible too, it's a great experience.

Well as I mentioned, my school is in the process of trying to send me and a couple of others to NAB. I should know within a couple of weeks how it works out.
After havign attended IBC 2 years running, I really hope I can get to NAB too.

Maybe it's time for someone to start up a NAB '06 thread in the "meetings" section.

I would, but I'm not sure I'm going yet...

You can look forward to some sort of NAB DVX gathering- we had a great one last year at the Panny booth.
