Luckily, I was able to catch up w/ Jan at NAB and she was gracious enough to conduct a short on-camera interview next to the AG-HVX200 in the glass case. It's short, but gives you a bit of info on P2 and her thoughts as to how the HVX200 will compare with the DVX100.

You can catch it here http://dvestore.com/theatre/

Cheers,

I get the feeling that the cameras back bone is the 720P mode. They seem to be really emphasizing it. Notice how the only mentioned 720P and 1080i? It also sounds like the downconvert to tape may only be from 720p and not 1080. Why is the 1080 24p like how it is with the DVX with the redundant frame scheme? Sounds to me like there's some funky uprezzing to 1080 happening as well as something different with how the 24P at 1080 will be going on. Some have argued that 720P and 1080i is essentially the same resolution which makes sense. Either way, I'm satisfied with 720P and 4:2:2 with 24p, 30p, and 60p.

Mmmmmmm Merlinnnn...must have one...

I agree 720p with 4:2:2 and 24p is a big step forward. But can you save that out at "HD" 100 mgps or is it just the 1080 mode?

Oh well, the upcoming months will tell us.

Because the codec doesn't support 1080/p natively.

DVCPRO-HD was designed to support either 1080i or 720p, so it handles both of those natively. But to get 1080/24p or 1080/30p, they have to implement it carried within a 1080i stream. I don't see any problem with it, it's identical to how they wedged 24p and 30p within the DV specification, and that sure worked out well.

I never got the idea that 1080p was any sort of lesser concern with the HVX. I mean, they just introduced a brand-new 1080i camera, the HDX400, so it's obvious that they're concerned with making great 1080 footage. I think the 1080 will be implemented well, and should be fantastic, but as always, the reality (i.e., viewing the actual footage) is all that counts. And we're a few months away from being able to do that.

Hi,

The DV codec doesn't support 480P natively either Bob. Do you think the DVX100A looks inferior? I mean I do not understand why you would say that you think the 1080P extraction would be less than.

Best,

Jan

Sorry Jan. I wasn't sure how the 1080p was being produced. I can certainly live with 2:3:3:2 advanced pulldown to achieve 1080p. If it's anything like 480p on the DVX, that's cool.
