NAB Day Two Highlights

Day two is in the books here at NAB. Here's what I saw today that I think might tickle your filmmaky-parts...

LED Fresnels. (Copied and pasted from my other thread because I'm exhausted.)

The two booths who had the best-looking fixtures were Aputure and LEDGO. The Aputure 120T is a killer light. CRI 97. High output. Super quiet. And it's a single-source bulb. Works with Bowens mount accessories, so you can stick all sorts of modifiers on the front of it. The actual fresnel lens itself is very cool as well. The ballast is compact, and easy to use. (Pictures later tonight.) The price: under $600. You'll want two or three of these.

Then there's the Aputure LS-C20. It's a cute little bugger, with 95 CRI, adjustable beam angle and fresnel lens, and it's got dual/switchable power supplies. You can power it off an Anton Bauer battery, or you can plug a cellphone charger into it and use that. The barndoors really let you shape the light, and it's so light and powerful, you can put it just about anywhere. Add it to two of the larger 120T lights, and you've got a great LED kit that travels well. Price: under $200. Both LED fresnels should be shipping in about a month or so. Pics...

LEDGO also had some nice LED fresnels on show. They come in a variety of sizes, from the smaller 300 up to the pretty huge 4500. The two models I think you guys would be most interested in would be the 600 and 1200. All of LEDGO's fresnels are 95 CRI. The 600 is a 60W (I think it has 60 LEDs) fixture, and the 1200 is a 120W (120 LEDs) fixture. Both are 5600K, and come with color-correction filters for different temperatures. Both are fully dimmable, with no discernable color shift, and can be controlled via wi-fi. (The 1200M adds DMX capability.) They're well-built and solid, and I'd have no issues using these on a daily basis. I can't recall pricing, but I spoke to the CEO of LEDGO, and he gets it. These will be competitively priced based on the features they have, and they'll be available in 6-8 weeks. Pics...

If you put a sharp object to my throat and made me pick one or the other, I'd probably lean towards Aputure. And if you've ever seen or used the LightStorm LEDs, you'll know how good their quality control and build quality can be. The Aputure 120T is a little smaller than the LEDGO, and at the price, I think it's a no-brainer. I don't think you could go wrong with either one, and it was good to spend time with the guys in charge of both companies. Like I said, they both get it. They want to give us high-quality filmmaking tools that compete with the big boys, but at prices indies like us can swing. And I think they're both hitting the mark.

More Aputure

More Aputure

LED Fresnels aren't all Aputure had to show. They also had the DEC Lens Adapter, which basically combines a "speedbooster" with an active EF mount AND remote follow focus/lens control capability. They had it rigged up on a GH4, on a Ronin whatever, using the wireless lens controller as one of the grips. This thing looked slick, and I could see this really being useful for a lot of folks. Right now it's EF-M43 only, but Ted did say that a Sony E-Mount version is in the works. Pics...

They also had a shotgun mic on display. I know what you're probably thinking...really? Well, like everything they seem to do, they've taken something we all need and/or use, and built a quality product for way less than the competition. This thing is well-built, sounds great, and will come in at a great price.

People think Ted and I are related, but I don't see the resemblance.

Next up...more monitors.

I stopped by the Flanders Scientific booth today and chatted with one of their reps. Now, listen...I get it. We can't all afford a $5K plus grading monitor. (I certainly can't.) So I asked them straight up what their entry-level monitor was, and why it's worth the money. He showed me the AM210 Broadcast monitor, which looked gorgeous. It's a full HD, 21.5" monitor, and while it's only 8-bit, it comes calibrated from the factory, AND all of FSI's monitors include free calibration for as long as you own it. Just pay for shipping, and they'll do the rest. That's the kind of support you get from a company like FSI, and while it's hard to put a price tag on what that's worth, it's worth a good bit to know there's always going to be someone to help troubleshoot critical gear. The price on the AM210 is just under $2K.

When it comes to rigging up a camera, few companies do it better than Wooden Camera. And they've got some pretty cool new wooden handgrips (rosette attachment), a new Unified VCT baseplate system that fits a wide range of cameras, and new top plates and other bits worth a look. Very cool stuff, as usual.

If you've used the AadynTech Punch or Jab LED lights, you know how powerful they are. Now there's the Punch Plus, which delivers up to 50 percent more light for about the same power use.

More lighting stuff at Westcott. They've improved the Scrim Jim frames by giving them a snap-lock system. (So no more of me fumbling with frame pieces and fabrics.) They also have the 4x4 floppy and the Book Light kit, which are both great additions to any grip package.

Finally in lighting, there was the Hive 1000w Plasma bulb. It's five times brighter than the current 250w bulb, and delivers the punch of a 2.5K HMI or 10K tungsten light. The bulb has a CRI of 98, and is rated for 50,000 hours of use. Oh, and it's flicker free at ANY frame rate. At around $8K, it's not going to be a light everyone needs, but if you need it, it's worth it.

I'll post up some more stuff tomorrow night. And if there's anything you want to see, let me know!

Panasonic released a “Like GH4 Scene File” for their DVX200 camera, can the DVX200 and GH4 be matched really well using this Like GH4 Scene File?

I'll post up some more stuff tomorrow night. And if there's anything you want to see, let me know!
What about Redrock Halo Solo?

Can you gather some information on topic, please?

A footage demo -- not exactly the typical porn on the device, that would even be rather more useful...

THANKS!

I'm getting excited about LED lights as it seems like we're finally getting into the price & performance sweet zone.

Indeed, I really want a Dedolight kit, but at the thousands they cost for a set it is just a little too pricey for me.
But this looks very tempting, could get an Aputure 120T plus 2x Aputure LS-C20 for less than a grand. Get a few accessories for light modifiers, and you've got a nice kit here!

I haven't been excited about LEDs since 2008... and yes, I agree with you.

I remember when the first digital cameras came out... and I wondered when they'd replace film as the only GOOD digital still wasn't as good as film... and cost a fortune. Right now I think LED is akin to the Nikon D70 in it's day. (Not everyone will get that comment, but if you do... you know what I mean).

In the right hands the current gen LEDs may be discernible from tungsten... but not by much.

This system got my attention. Does anyone knows if it's got an option to track a marker similarly like Andra focus? If so, I'm stoked, it's very cheap when you compare it to andra (which is like $70k?)
It is less (up to $28,800), even though, still much of a difference:

I'd sincerely appreciate to have more and detail information on this product, as well, full price, etc a year later from such promising presentation:

Sorry, guys, but I'm not at the show today. I'm putting some thoughts together on a bunch of booths I visited, but RedRock wasn't one of them.

The picture of the Photometrics that you took at the Aputure booth: Are those specs for the large fresnel (120t) or for the smaller one? Those numbers are significantly lower than the LS1, so I'm hoping they are the specs for the LS-C20, and not for the 120t.
