NAB: Announc: P2 Price?

Barry, is the native resolution of the CCDs on the HPX500 higher than that of the HVX?

I hope so....

What's the price on this bad boy...

And another question. With these larger cams...do I still need a 35mm adapter or can I get prime lenses that go right on the cam that can give me the same look? I know they'd probably be expensive but I totally wouldn't mind renting a set of primes for whenever I need them.

Jan said it should be around $22,000 with VF, lens, and 4 16GB cards.

The point of using an adapter is to get shallower depth of field. A 2/3" camera is going to have dramatically shallower DOF than a 1/3" camera is. Not as much as a 35mm camera, but way shallower than any 1/3" will do (because of the focal length of the lenses). So I'd say that while you may want to use one of those adapters, an enterprising shooter can probably get the look they want without having to resort to one of them.

That's not bad at all...

Yeah I get all that...but don't they have film style lenses for these camera? Basically, can you just eliminate the need for the adapter and using say 35mm Nikon lenses, and use lenses that mount right on the camera that give you the same effect?

it funny cause for me the 4 gigs are still the best because they fit on a dvd which allows for a great on set workflow for narrative shoots.

of course bigger is better for other stuff

You can burn 8gigs of data to a Dual Layer DVD. As long as you have a Dual-Layer burner which most burners are at the moment.

That's a damn good deal for what you're getting... but still, for that price, why am I not buying a Red instead? :)

I predict a fire sale on 4GB P2 cards, and then they disappear.

That's fine by me. I love my four gigers. They're the best bang for your buck and easy to transfer to DVD. Honestly, I don't see how you'd want an 8 gig over 2 4 gigs. I certainly can spare the ten seconds of transfer time.

Ditto,
For around the same price you could be shooting 4K on a decently equipped Red.

You can cut DVCproHD right here, right now. Even the Hydra setup will be ready to go immediately.

Can't say that much for RED til it's actually out.

So, sure, you could be shooting 4k on a decent equipped RED. But, what will you be doing with it?

Not everybody needs what Red has to offer. Sure, the ability to shoot 4k is nice, but for shooters who are never going to need to go above 1080 (which will be the highest TV standard for a LONG time) there isn't a whole lot of reason to go for the Red over the Panasonic. The HPX will have a workflow that the HVX has already established, and the support of Panasonic. The Red looks like an uber camera, but you're talking about a workflow that is brand new, a company that is only a couple years old, and capabilities that are far beyond what many will ever need.

Also, since when will you be able to get a Red, glass, vf, and your recording method for 20 grand? I thought that to fully deck it out you were looking at closer to 40?

I thought it was closer to 35 or 40k just as well. Great camera, great theory, will take some time to adopt.

Hydra's comin' along though, so that's the future of my HVX. =)

And the HPX cam is totally reasonable, seeing as how it's here and it's now in every sense, and will probably produce a better image than it's smaller form sibling.

Well, that is until Hydra. Am I really promoting Hydra here? How many times have I typed Hydra?
