NAB 2018 New Products

I was hoping they did, but maybe it's a futile hope. I guess nothing under 10k this NAB from Canon so far.

Between the affordable cinema cameras, the Panasonic GH5s, the amazing 4k cameras Sony puts out and now the BMD 4k Pocket camera for $1,300 I honestly think it might be time for Canon to just give up on the whole DSLR film making thing.

Canon seems to be too confident to notice what's going on around them. Blackmagic is changing the dynamics of this industry with their new releases. Currently I use Panasonic and Canon but very interested in the Pocket 4k Camera. If the native 3200 ISO is clean then this camera is a no brainer. BM is even eying Adobe as they are including their new release of Resolve/Fusion 15 with the camera. Maybe in a future release they can include continuous AF, a tilt screen and maybe MP4 codec to make it extremely diverse. I have a feeling I will be picking a couple of them for interviews along with the Sony A7III for gimbal use.

They have eyed Adobe a long time ago ever since they released free versions of Resolve and Fusion with very little restrictions. There is very little that cannot be done with the free versions of Resolve and Fusion. By the time you start to miss some of the benefits of the paid versions you are likely way beyond no budget productions and can easily afford the $299. Especially now that Resolve and Fusion together are only $299. Adobe should be very worried.

I'm a long time Panasonic user myself yet I am very tempted by the Pocket 4k camera as well. Love that all my m43 lenses will work wit the camera. Only thing holding me back is battery life, lack of a more efficient format like the 150mbps 10bit 4:2:2 on the GH5 and the very low stills resolution of the 4k Pocket. I shoot video and stills and a hybrid DSLR makes the most sense for that.

The new BlackMagic will put a hell of a lot of pressure in the <$5k market.
The specs of the GH5 and GH5s suddenly are not all that special.
And Sony will have to up their game: I was hoping for an a7S III with 4k 60fps, eye-detect AF in video mode, and either improved DR or internal 10-bit, but, with the pocket 4k selling for $1300, I will only consider it if it has ALL of those things. Leave one out and I'll just get a pocket 4k and wait for the next big thing.
As for Canon... they won't do anything. Vloggers will still use some of their cameras, and at some point they suddenly won't, and people at Canon will talk with nostalgia about those times when they somehow found themselves selling cameras to most of the filmmaker wannabes in the world. It was not a thing they wanted, not something they worked for: it was something that happened to them, and it's almost over.

As much as I would have liked it, in reality they are killing it because of one thing called dual pixel AF and Vlogs. There must be 10X more vloggers than filmakers now and they are number one in this field.

Big fan of Aputure. I have used my kit a lot. I would like to see a panel that size but with big lumens, like 20,000-25,000 lumens @ 1M. I know the battery life would be terrible but even if you could only get 30 min on an AB brick or two it would be very useful to use against the sun when needed.

Aputure RGB looks cool. That LED tech is the future as it matures. Philips Hue + Pro Lighting. When they can get RGB features into LS1 form factor with 300d brightness, lighting will truly be changed forever.

Really appreciate what Aputure is doing. Great products, competitive prices, really changing the industry and making good lighting accessible.
