NAB 2013 predictions?

Blackmagic Design will be announcing the much anticipated BMCC "Tardis" accessory. The Tardis enables people on the BMCC waiting list to travel forward in time and receive their BMCC. The Tardis is expected to start shipping in 2037 and will be available for preorder on the 1st of April.

What a commentary on Black Magic. With such a debacle, some heads should have rolled. All we heard is blame game as to how some unknown supplier is at fault etc etc. Some business school should do a case study about BMCC

Even without the sensor and flange problems I think they hugely underestimated the demand for the camera.

Not to mention that it's about the size of a matchbook, but on the inside there's the equivalent of a six-bedroom house and swimming pool.

Still not as bad as Red's handling of Scarlet. The problem with transparency -- first Red's, then BMD's -- is that it invariably amounts to a tale of screw-ups, snafus, technical issues, and the like. If everything went according to plan, it would be unnecessary. You never hear, "We've rigorously tested the camera and encountered no issues. In fact, all specs meet or exceed those we originally announced. We estimated that we'd be shipping by the end of July, but -- oops! -- we'll actually start shipping a month earlier. And by the way, the price -- oh, boy, is this embarrassing -- will be $500 less than we announced. Sorry."

Which is why pre-announcing is a bad idea and, in this market of instant information access, unnecessary. Hopefully other manufacturers will have learned from this and will know to keep their traps shut until they're ready to ship. How huge would it have been for the BMC if, I mean, imagine this alternate scenario: instead of announcing at NAB 2012, and then enduring a year of complaints, bashing, customer frustration, irritation, and anger... instead, what if they hadn't said a single word... not until NAB 2013, when they would have announced this still-equally-groundbreaking camera, but the difference was that they could honestly say "shipping now." They would have received all of the glory, and none of the pain, none at all... they would have won the whole internet, instead of the fiasco they have endured...

Yeah their only saving grace is that they have no competitor in their segment...yet. I'm betting there is gonna be a ready to ship camera coming at NAB. GoPro is gonna have a cam...I can taste it...it just makes sense. I however do love my Blackmagic...I didn't pre-order til Jan of this year.

Or they could do what Panasonic and Sony have done: show a "concept" and be vague about its release date and specs. What they tried to do -- get a camera to market quickly and relatively transparently -- was commendably noble.

Is it just my perception, or are there much less NAB rumors around than usually?
It's not just you -- there does seem like a paucity of rumors. Either the manufacturers have kept a tight lid on leaks and we'll be surprised, or (more likely) we should reduce our expectations. Panasonic, which has no announced professional 4K products beyond a codec and a nonfunctioning concept camera, is in financially dire condition. I would love to see a 12-bit, 4K successor to the AF10X (at roughly the same price point), but it probably won't happen. After a few years, they still haven't added real 10-bit output to the AF101. Canon and Sony have pretty much announced their new products already. Maybe there will be a GoPro with a removable lens (and QuadHD at 24/30p, rather than 15p).

I fully agree with Barry. BMC had messed up badly. However, from now onwards if they get their act right, then they can still make it a success. The guys who had put a deposit for a year, should get something in return from BMC as a token of appreciation. BMC should have announced some freebies for those early believers or champions (I am not talking about the few reviewers or guys who had some special relation with BMC but the common man and woman who put a deposit).

I feel hype when you can deliver the product is the right thing. Else, it can be bad. In India, Tata Motors had announced the small car Nano. It had 21 patents and got great reviews around the world. Then the company faced challenges as a political party demonstrated against its plant. So the plant had to be shifted from West Bengal to Gujarat. There were delays and people lost interest. Its competitors also started spreading rumours. At least in case of BMC we don't see its competitors trying to fuel the fire about the infinity focus issues. BMC has to win back the customer and change the negativity to positive energy.

I would be surprised if there are no announcements in NAB aimed to compete with the BMC.

Panasonic sent me a number of press releases forming their pre-NAB press release package. I posted them in this forum. Seems they've been focusing heavily on MicroP2/AVC-Ultra and a new top-of-the-line 2/3" broadcast mega-cam, the PX5000.

There may be more product introductions at the show itself (there usually are) but from what I can see here, it looks like their main focus this year is on MicroP2 and top-end products.

I have a feeling Sony might replace the FS100 with a cinegamma FS200 and Canon might drop the price of the C100 to compete and introduce a C200 at an FS700 price point. I can't see how Canon could do a C50 given the stripped down feature set of the C100 but we know how Canon likes to squeeze every last yen out their tech so who knows.

My other prediction is the Blackmagic CEO is gonna be chased around the show floor by a good old Texas lynch mob, if the New Englanders don't burn him at the stake first. But it's zee Germans he really has to worry about.

It’s not so much that I disagree, with some here but I do have a different perspective, which in part, is:

Not all pre-orders required money.
There’s nothing stopping anyone from cancelling and getting their deposit (if one was required) returned.
As far as BlackMagic doing something for the people that had to wait so long (or are still waiting), how ‘bout getting to buy a working model at the same price it was initially announced?
If you think about it, it's unlikely that any of the pre-order money went in BlackMagic’s bank account.
And while we’re on price and delays, does the phrase “3K for 3K” ring any bells?

I think manufacturers can be expected to generate a little pre-production excitement, that’s called marketing.
At least BlackMagic’s NAB 2012 display announcement wasn’t piece of balsa wood under glass, spray painted black.
And there was early on, due largely to John Brawley (initially), and others like Marco Solorio and Phillip Bloom some compelling footage out there to evaluate.

My last 7 new camera purchases have been Panasonic, 2 of which (my bad, being an early adopter) were summarily returned to be corrected shortly after taking their first breath . . . and a third camera with fewer than 25 hours on it.
I’m not pretty familiar with the floor plan in Secaucus.
Not criticizing Panasonic for that, just say’in, stuff happens, and I’m still a customer.

On balance, most people that have followed the BMCC saga closely would probably agree that while BM might have handled things differently it’s fair to say that some of the issues were not within their control.
You have to admire the fact that they maintain a forum where they have taken a blistering in over 50+ pages, of complaints (largely by the same handful of people), and not deleted a single comment. I find that remarkable and uncommon.

Anyhow, I’m looking forward to NAB this year. I’m also keeping any eye on BM to see what surprises (the positive ones) await us down the road regarding micro 4/3 mounts.
Here’s hoping that they, and others will have some new (and hopefully deliverable) tech that completely blows us away!

Best.

I would love to see some good yet affordable 9-11" field monitors be introduced. I know JVC is coming out with an 8.2" model but it is listed for $1,600! Not holding my breath though...

It's pretty common here, we take it on the chin. I'm just taking the piss with BM, I think they're doing great things for indies, people just have to lower their expectations and chill a bit. Why spend the whole day assembling cameras when you can be going for a surf.... it's not bloody China you know!

I think if they can show a working model, then it's okay to announce the product. I believe BMD did so in good faith, with full expectations that they can meet their delivery dates (or maybe with small delays). A lot of the problems they had were beyond their control. We know now that the BMC would still be groundbreaking at NAB 2013, but they didn't know that at NAB 2012. What if BMD held off and a competitor announced a similar product in late 2012? Then BMD would be an also-ran. Or what if by announcing the BMC, they stopped a competitor from proceeding with a similar product? I think announcing the camera at NAB 2012 was the right marketing decision. It's unfortunate how things turned out, but I hope they can recover. After all, they still have a groundbreaking product if only they can deliver it.

Back on topic please. There's plenty to be said about BMC, but I'm trying to keep up on this thread for potential NAB news (even if it is a little slow)

Procured my March 2013 issue of POST magazine and it had this under bits & pieces for NAB 2013.

'At NAB 2013, GOPRO (www.gopro.com) will debut its newest
line of Hero3 cameras. The company also has plans to show some
new proof-of-concept technology.'
