Mysterious Broken DVX100B

Hello, after hours of using the search button and sifting through hundreds of posts and finding some info I've decided to start my own thread with hopes of getting some positive feedback.

Im a BCIT film(flex) student in Burnaby BC Canada, with our tuition we are given a DVX100B. We start class in Nov. Around Xmas time I started noticing more and more that there was something funny about my zoom and focus rings. I figured I started noticing it more because I knew more about the camera then.

ANYWAYS, I was out shooting one day and my "servo zoom" and my "manual focus" started to die. . Manual zoom and auto focus worked though. By the end of the weekend when I could take it to my teachers the problem had worsened to the point that the camera didnt work anymore.

When I gave the cam to my Camera teacher who uses a DVX100 in many shoots around the globe and is a union cam op , basically knows his ****, he couldnt seem to find why the focus and zoom wouldnt work. He tossed it around and played with the rings and removed the small box on the front and put it back on and listened to the camera and he was stumped.

We decided to send it back to "Cine-quip White" in Toronto to have it warrantied but they said as soon as they got it that.. quote " It fell apart in our hands " Funny that it would just "fall apart" as soon as they got it. Why didnt it fall aprt in my hands or my teachers hands.

"Cine-Quip White" said that I must have dropped the camera and that I would have to replace the whole front end of the camera for a large sum of " $1800 dollars "

I know I didnt drop it and I get the feeling that it was broken when I got the camera to begin with. I need your help with experinces with similar problems like this or with "Cine-Quip White " Is the DVX100 prone to easily breaking on the front of the camera ? I read a different thread where a guy seemed to have the same issue but only payed $300 dollars to fix it at a store in Richmond BC.

Any help would be appreciated , the camera has been in Toronto since January and BCIT hasnt seemed to be interested at all in helping a student in need, in the mean time I;ve been given an old original DVX100 till now. Its still a good camera but I've payed top dollar for a new camera and I want to use a new camera.

Sounds like some students have been using the manual zoom in servo mode, and forcing the issue when they encountered resistance. This can really mess up a DVX.

You should have taken it to RBE Video Inc. They are located in Richmond BC and are an authorized Panasonic service centre. I believe they are also the authorized service centre for Panasonic HD for Western Canada.
Is it too late to get your camera back? I can't believe they have been sitting with your camera since January.

I second that.

What do they mean it "fell apart in our hands"? what fell apart? the entire lens came off? the entire camera fell into a thousand pieces?

Get details about what fell apart.

This is just my experience. It may or may not help you. I got a DVX100b and after 37 hours the image started shaking and jumping, the image started to shake and jump every time I used the FOCUS (auto or manual). I got no warning signs on the LCD, but the image contiued to get worse and the camera made noise. So I took it to Panasonic Canada, located in Ontario. They checked it out and told me I had to get a new CBA board. From what I was told and from what I can gather, the CBA board controlled the image and focus.

In total it cost me 978.00 to get it repaired (labor, parts, tax included.) Labor was two hours, 150.00 per hour.

I can't see how they are charging you 1800.00. Ask them what parts need to be replaced, get the parts number and give Panasonic Canada a call, the direct line to the Tech dept is [FONT=Arial, Helvetica]905-238-4045 if you want to email them, I listed their website below
