My video sucks! Suggestions

I have been making DVDs for about 4 years now in FCP. Currently using v.4.5 and DVD Studio Pro with not satisfactory results. Normally I import DV shot from a Sony HC1 (480i or 1080i) and now I have a 100b (last shot in 60i). The 100b was set at squeeze with FCP importing it as anamorphic DV and the Sony was imported as standard DV as it is already in a 16:9 format but a DV not HD.

So here is the problem. I can import, edit, use deinterlace filter in FCP but when it is ready to export I guess I am doing something wrong. Normally my videos are 1.5 to 2 hours long. My movies are for DVD only. No internet usage and it seems that is what I see most talked about in these forums.

I export in MPEG-2, 16:9, 1 VBR Pass set at 6.0 mbps and 8.0 mbps. I add that to DVD SP and burn a DVD. When I go to view it, it never looks sharp like what I see on TV. The detail is just not there.

Anyone out their making long DVDs with a good work pattern they can share with me? I am desperate. I want to see at least what the video looks like when I RCA out from the camera and push play on the camera.

Suggestions?

Your mistake is shooting 60i in squeeze mode. Those two settings do not play nice together. And deinterlacing to try and correct for that won't help at all.

If you want to get 16:9 from a DVX, shoot 24p, 24pA, or 30p in squeeze.

Why are you deinterlacing the footage when it's final destination is for an interlaced TV screen? FCP's deinterlace is weak as well. If you need to deinterlace something use Compressor.

Okay, good advice but I need to learn more about exporting steps. I was thinking I was screwing up on the actual export file. Also does anyone unsharp the video? I use unsharp for almost every photo I take going to a printer. I wanted to shoot 30p but did not realize the 100b was setup incorrectly so it reset to 60i. I did a single VBR set at 6 and 10. What should the average 1 hour video be set at? Is there a point to where the VBR rate exceeds your average DVD player?
