Hihi ;D

This post is ALL about the DVX in Chinatown!!

:) WATCH VIDEO HERE!! :)

So, I went to Chinatown and did a number of tests with camera settings in preparation for shooting an action/fight scene this weekend for a feature film I’m working on.

I got the DVX two weeks ago and I’m trying to figure out the best settings and all that - hope you can share your opinion on the following questions (there are a lot, heh).

Some frame grabs from the video:
chinatown_curahee1.jpg
chinatown_neo.jpg

chinatown_dream.jpg
chinatown_goldcrush1.jpg

chinatown_no85.jpg
chinatown_none.jpg

My ULTIMATE GOAL is a film transfer to 35mm. So please share your insight on what camera settings I should set to achieve the best film transfer (squeeze, 4x3, letterbox? ...etc.)

This post is divided into three sections:

1. Video of Chinatown
2. Frame grabs of Chinatown with varying camera settings
3. Miscellaneous questions

***** ;D PART 1: The Video *****

:) WATCH VIDEO HERE!! :)
http://www.glue.umd.edu/~younglee/AE/chinatown3_small.mov

I put together a video of various shots and did color correction with Vegas and MagicBullet. Everything was done handheld.

My Main Question:
Let me know what MagicBullet shot do you like the best...

My settings were as follows:

Shutter: 1/37.5 (yea, too much motion blur)
The rest of the camera settings I used are listed below in Part 2....

***** ;D PART 2: Frame Grabs of Camera settings *****

I tested three things:
A. Gamma
B. Detail Level
C. Master Ped

I changed one setting at a time. With exception to the setting I was changing at the time, all other settings were:

DETAIL LEVEL: 3
V DETAIL, DETAIL CORING, CHROMA LEVEL, CHROMA PHASE, COLOR TEMP: 0
MASTER PED: -6
A IRIS LEVEL: -1
GAMMA: Cine-Like V
KNEE: Auto
MATRIX: Norm
SKIN TONE: Off
V DETAIL FREQ: Thin
PROGRESSIVE: 24PA

SETUP: 0%
Shot with SQUEEZE MODE.
Synchro Scan Shutter: 1/37.5

;D A. Gamma
ND Filter: 1/64 (highest)
F-Stop: open

GAMMA: LOW
gamma_low.jpg

GAMMA: NORMAL
gamma_norm.jpg

GAMMA: B-PRESS
gamma_bpress.jpg

GAMMA: HIGH
gamma_high.jpg

GAMMA: CINELIKE
gamma_cinelike.jpg

GAMMA: CINELIKE-D
gamma_cinelikeD.jpg

GAMMA: CINELIKE-V
gamma_cinelikeV.jpg

My Main Question:
I can't really see too much difference in all of these. What do you think? Does it really matter? Some people recommend that we stick with NORMAL to avoid noise in low-light conditions and correct with post, but does CINELIKE offer a better image to start with?

On to the next test...

;D B. Detail Level
ND Filter: 1/64 (highest)
F-Stop: 2.8

DETAIL LEVEL: -7
detail_level_neg7.jpg

DETAIL LEVEL: -3
detail_level_neg3.jpg

DETAIL LEVEL: 0
detail_level_0.jpg

DETAIL LEVEL: +3
detail_level_pos3.jpg

DETAIL LEVEL: +7
detail_level_pos7.jpg

My Main Question:
My ultimate goal is a 35mm film transfer. Should I just crank the detail to +7 and leave it there all the time?

Ok, last test....

;D C. Master Ped
ND Filter: 1/64 (highest)
F-Stop: 2.4

MASTER PED: -6
master_ped_neg6.jpg

MASTER PED: -4
master_ped_neg4.jpg

MASTER PED: -2
master_ped_neg2.jpg

MASTER PED: 0
master_ped_0.jpg

MASTER PED: +5
master_ped_pos5.jpg

MASTER PED: +15
master_ped_pos15.jpg

My Main Question:
So you can see that the higher the Master Ped goes, the more hazy it gets. Would you recommend that I stick with the lower value? And how low? For a film transfer, do you think a Master Ped of -15 is ideal (the lowest it can go?)

***** ;D PART 3: Miscellaneous Questions *****

Whew! After all that, thanks for reading till this point. I got a few misc questions...please shed some light on these matters:

Film transfer settings
1. I asked this in another thread, but if I am transferring my footage to 35mm film, is it best to shoot in Squeeze, 4x3 or Letterbox?
2. I don’t think I will be getting my DVX battery in the mail by this Saturday, so I am stuck with only my factory battery. This means I have like 30 minutes of camera power for a 5 hour shoot. I’ll have to turn off the camera after each shot. So, to maintain consistency, do I have to White Balance and do exposure stuff everytime I turn it back on?
3. What shutter speed do you recommend? 1/48? I think I had way too much motion blur in my tests.

So there you have it, a comprehensive series of tests and stuff in Chinatown DC. Thanks for reading and I appreciate all of your input very much!

Btw, I apologize for the quality of the large still captures, I havent figured out how to capture images in Vegas, so I used an image capture software to grab frames directly off the Vegas timeline!!!

EDIT - Please help answer these questions below
Besides the misc questions above, I realize I have asked many questions, so here are all the main ones together:

1. My ULTIMATE GOAL is a film transfer to 35mm. So please share your insight on what camera settings I should set to achieve the best film transfer: squeeze, 4x3, letterbox?

2. Let me know what MagicBullet shot do you like the best in the video.

3. Some people recommend that we stick with NORMAL to avoid noise in low-light conditions and correct with post, but does CINELIKE offer a better image to start with?

4. So you can see that the higher the Master Ped goes, the more hazy it gets. Would you recommend that I stick with the lower value? And how low? For a film transfer, do you think a Master Ped of -15 is ideal (the lowest it can go?)

thanks

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

to my understanding, assuming they are going to shoot it onto 35mm academy, during projection there will likely be a piece of metal in front of the projector that will crop out top and bottom leaving only academy aperture size viewable. probably letterbox is better choice (unless you have anamorphic lens) because whether you crop or not crop doesn't matter if they just uprezzing to 2k w/no change in aspect ratio. some movie projects actually count on that piece to crop out their boom mikes, as explained to me by a local projectionist.
pls correct me if i'm mistaken, but don't flame - i have a weak heart, liver, lungs, and butt and may faint. :P

those magic bullet grabs look fantastic !!!

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

What a great POST. This is sure to get some conversation.

The MB Looks are wonderful. I love Curahee (Band of Brothers Baby!). Yet, I'm also digging the Gold Crush. Then again the lower right grab (Is this uncorrected) is looking great with all of those colors.

I'm thinking the overall look of your film is going to depend on what its about; subject matter, genre, etc.

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

I like the lower right too. If that is uncorrected then just shoot it like that. looks great

It's very weird to see someone else post pictures on DVXUser that show the building I'm sitting in.

you've convinced me to buy magic bullet. only 149 dollars.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Much appreciated. Again, if anyone can help me answer my technical questions (at end of the post), that'd be great. Keep the comments coming ;)

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

Thanks for a thought-provoking post.

I believe that not all film-out houses are equal, and each of them have definate opinions about how you need to shoot your movie so as to get the best result from *their* own process. You might as well start talking to a couple outfits, get their suggested settings, and take some test footage. This SHOULDN'T cost you a dime for very short test shots; it is a small price for the film-out places to get your business.

Good luck on your project.

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

Here is some advice:
Whatever you do, DO NOT apply any of those soft filters to your image. You want to have the sharpest image possible when you transfer to film. I learned the hard way. My stuff look out of focus when I saw it on the big screen. Embarassing. Remember avoid the soft looks.

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

Well noted Bluespider...are you talking about soft filters like what Magic Bullet does? Or are you talking about actual filters you put in front of your lens? What exactly did you do to your movie?

thanks

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

Either really. They both have the same effect :)

Soft filters are ok for DVD distribution though

It was a soft dreamy look. It looked really cool on a TV but when we transferd it to 35film, man it look horrible. I didn't use magic bullet at the time because well, magic bullet didn't even exist yet. Avoid soft filters too like the Promist. You can magic bullet but avoid the ones that will soften your footage. It may look cool on your TV but on the big screen its diffrent. Not enless your shooting on film or HD. They have higher resoulution.

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

Some film out joints will transfer single images to 35mm slides for a small fee. You can project them to see how the look in the large. You can also get a couple minutes without sound done and screened for a fee. I don’t know of ANY that will do test footage for free.

:-/ Please correct me if wrong

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

What a thorough post - thanks sincerely for going to the effort for all of us.

My question concerns your last grab of the first 'lot' if you will - it's the guy with the brown leather jacket. I think this shot is the most colorful, but I didn't see what 'setting' you used in MB to get it. Was it just a matter of color correction? If so what tool? MB or something else?

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

..ive got to agree with spider on that. DV originated footage softens up enough on the big screen already. MB really softens the footage with most of its effects.. which is great for TV, but not so great for film out or large format projection. it will soften on its own there.. if you want the look of a specific MB effect just snap a still of it, and then learn how to color correct to match what the MB preset does by using your standard or plugin color corrector in your NLE, and then it will still be sharp . in PPRO 1.5 if i take the time to copy a MB preset in the PPRO corrector, i just save it as a preset with the same name so i can choose between the MB version or my own PPRO version.. pending what makes the most sense for the project. besides, doing it in your own corrector means WAAAAAAAY faster render times as well.

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

Re: My Video: CHINATOWN + Magic Bullet = Film-like

First of all, these clips look like WHOA.
I love them. I think something changed since the last time I saw the clip though. The clip that's currently marked as Bleached Bypass was something like "No Correction"...anyhow, those deeeeep deeeeep colors (it had a lot of depth) Were great. I can imagine an action sequence looking like that.

As for your questions...
2. I like Curahee the best (I don't notice any motion blur)
3. I'm no CINE expert, but if you're aiming to blow it up, then whichever setting avoids noise would also offer the best starting image.
4. As far as the haze, I wasn't digging it at all...kill the haze.

Also, I jus saw PRIMER, sundance winner shot in 3 years for 7,000. It looked like CRAP (out of focus and some cheap lighting), but the story was EXCELLENT (and VERY confusing) and even though they LOOKED bad, the shots were great selections and angles...so if you have a great action sequence with great shots and great composition (as we can tell that you do) then you won't have to belly ache too much about the settings. If you shoot it the "right way" and it looks bad, I would say don't compromise. Because you could do everything by the book and still come out with a bad image, and it already looks like you're off to a great start..

Dude, even though they're totally random, I'm really feeling those clips!
Keep it up!
