Ok, I'm gonna start looking for work and so it's time to get a reel together. Sadly I don't have a ton of footage shot (work used to and now school keeps me so busy), but I think it's a decent-ish reel...but I don't know so crits would be cool. As I shoot more (horror fest entry) I'll add to it.

Anyways, some thoughts would be cool.

I understand that you do not have a lot of footage, but this reel needs to be much shorter. Some shots (like the lingering, panning overhead shot of the glasses of alcohol needs to be trimmed significantly. There are (in my view) only two or three projects that are a part of this reel - make it short - 45 seconds to a minute at most.

Take a weekend and plan out several shots and or lighting exercises that would push your skills....like a night exterior. They don't have to be big, but you need them to sell a client or director or whoever, that you have the talent to do bigger things. A few carefully constructed dolly shots could also do the same thing.

I like some of the shots, especially some of the B&W stuff and the tracking shot along the bar, but I think this reel needs to be short and powerful. As you progress and get more variety in the things you shoot, then you can turn the reel into a three and a half to four minute monster.

Hit them hard and quick, with your best stuff. You intelligence and artistic instincts should carry you the rest of the way to getting work when you speak to prospective clients, filmmakers, etc.

I agree fully with acoreasc's comments. Its a good looking reel though...and if i recall correctly you shot some of that stuff with an andromeda right?

Thanks guys! I tightened it up and even fit in a few more shots in the less time. Like some more input:

Click here to download. (same codecs)

As for the double credit, I actually manned the camera on all of those shots and planned a lot of them, but my friend/partner helps out a lot and I don't feel right taking full credit and since we'd probably do work together anyway It'd probably be good for prospective employers to expect two people anyway.

Malcolm, yup; everything except the B&W shots and the Car, and the now deleted walking shot is andromeda footage.

Virum - this is much better - it is shorter and hits us with your style without lingering too long on anything. The two shots that I thing should be a little shorter are the eyeball and the three shot with the girl getting the hat put on her. Keep them, but just trim them a little. Otherwise this is a much better representation, good luck! Keep shooting.....let me say that again, keep shooting....

Virum--A lot of your shots are very interesting, some of the camera movement is a little shaky for my taste but overall they're pretty shots. You use a lot of red. Be aware of that.

I didn't think it was too long, but thought it could be edited to the music a little better. After watching the shorter version though, it looks like you accomplished both!

Excellent footage. It shows you are skilled and versitle. I suppose my only suggestion would be to give it an ending. Even just a fade out of the last shot and show your name again. Contact info would be good too, and email address or something.

good reel

as nice as the whiskey pouring in t glass sequence is, i would leave it out, because he misses all but one glass. it just loosk funny. like an outtake.

I believe that was quite diliberate, seeing as it fades into the next shot where we see the three guys are falling over drunk.

thef0x: Yeah, a lot of it was done with a cruddy still camera tripod and a really bad homemade"steadicam." I have to admit I still have a bit of shake with my bogen tripod at times, but I'm sorting it out.

As for the whiskey pouring, it was deliberate. :) Drunken celebration. They're 150% smashed.

Thanks everyone for taking the time to comment.

that may be the case that it was deliberate but im telling you this as a viewer an how i percieved it.

keep in mind youre selling your skills. you only want the crem de la crem.

Well, I suppose he's right. If he perceived it as a mistake, other could also. However, I thought it was clear what was going on, so I guess we'll throw it back to you :)

The very beginning is a great intro, but a little jerky thru most of the shot. The bar scene looks awesome, do you have the clip uploaded anywhere around here (I'd love to see it)? I'm just about to shoot a scene in a bar, with four guys just having a good time after winning a card game, kind of like the scene from lock stock and two smoking barrels. Nice job!

Yeah the first shot was shot with my dad's 50 dollar still photo tripod (not made for motion picture work). I did that take 10 times trying to get it not to jerk...finally gave up.

I put the whole bar thing that I had rendered out here:

I have more shot, it's just unrendered at the moment. Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels inspired our scene a bit too.

Yea those UK flicks are great, that has got to be one of my fav.!

BTW Looks awesome, keep me posted when you finish it. :)
