yesterday i put a few things on layaway at the local store. One question keeps coming back in my mind. I put the sounds devices 552 on layaway but im wondering if i should get the 302 and the 702/702t? Would there be a big difference in quality?

Sound devices says the recording form the 7's is a little better than the 552 but they still pump up the 552 to sell it also. One unit seems easier but if the two separate sound alot better ill go with that.

Also plan to get the rode 3. Fits my budget and sounds good.
 
3 should but i guess 5 would be nice if i ever needed it. i cant go wrong either way since i really like the sd stuff. i guess the main thing is that i sont want to go back and say i wish i had bought something different.
 
The only other question: how much data display/metering do you feel you want/need with the recorder? On the 552, you have the one meter and no other data readout for recording. I think, as far as quality of recording, you'll be just fine either way.
 
thanks for the replies. yeah i cant go wrong with either one and both options are leaps and bounds better than the on camera mic.
 
well with the 552 you can do ISO's pre or post fade so if you use a multi channel recorder in the future that won't be an issue. i'm also about to plunker down on a 552. most the time i only need up to 3 channels but better to be prepared, future proofing.
