my sound is out of sync

We shot in 24pa. I have captured my footage with final cut pro and it looks fine. But after I try to reverse telecine with cinematools, the sound gets out of sync. and its weird cause it seems to be closer to sync at the beginning of the clip and more out of sync at the end.

Is this a common problem? How do I fix this problem short of manually realigning the sound in FCP?

Your assistance is much appreciated.

Re: my sound is out of sync

apparently every miniDV camera has unsynched sound to some degree, but usually it's unnoticeable because it's only a single field off. However, with the DVX in 24p, it's off by four fields, or a full two frames.

it's all explained here:

http://www.adamwilt.com/24p/index.html#AVsync

Supposedly FCP 4.1 solves the sync issue upon capture, and DVFilmMaker does as well.

Re: my sound is out of sync

I don't know if thats the exact problem. It not just 2 frames off (or 4 fields). Its like a couple seconds off. And if i manually resync the clip (with the clapstick, for example), it will still be off later on in the clip. I hope that makes sense.

And the strange thing is, we haven't run into this problem before. I've been able to capture footage and reverse telecine it, no problem. Just in the last couple days has this problem arisen.

Thanks for that link though, I hope there will be something there that will shed some light on this.

Re: my sound is out of sync

Two frames is normal for the DVX but it sounds like your sound is not "Locked" . How are you importing it? 8)

Re: my sound is out of sync

Its happening before I import it. this is the sequence of events.

-recorded in 24pA on our DVX100

-captured using final cut pro (at this point the sound is still fine)

-reverse telecine with Cinematools. After this, the sound is off. When I review it in Cinematools...when i open it in quicktime...when i open it in FCP.

What do you mean by 'locked' though? are you referring to the 'apple + L' command so you can move the sound and the video independently in the FCP timeline?

or do you mean something else?

Re: my sound is out of sync

Hey Eric. We had a sync drift in Art History that sounds like it may be similar to what you are having. Our problem was created when we output from FCP to uncompressed mov.. online'd in onto an Avid symphony then pushed it back out to an uncompressed mov.. sometimes it would get pooched sometimes it wouldnt. We never figured it out, we just corrected the sync in Vegas at the end.

Re: my sound is out of sync

Oh well...thanks for help anyway. Sounds like I have to solve this one the hard way.

thanks again
