Hey everyone,

I was wondering if anyone would like to view and rate my new show reel. I would like some advice for improvement in terms of choice of content and compression quality.

This specific one was designed for applying for a Corporate Video Producer position; however I want to use it as a generic one for my website, of course i will adjust it when applying for specific positions.

So my main purpose of this one is to showcase my work to a range of employers and clients online without knowing what specific job they are after.

Let me know and i will PM you the link as im low on bandwidth so can't give it out freely!

Kind regards,
st_

a private messager had these comments if anyone wants to compare:

It looks good. You have some great work on there. Here are my initial thoughts...

I like the fitness piece the commercial with the phones and the next bit with the short films. The show a wide range of skills that you have.

The first piece (JMC) is heavily edited which makes it hard to follow. Someone is about to speak and you cut away. There are edits in your reel that feel like edits in the program.

I would maybe not include the photo montage because it is sort of common for consumers these days. Let yourself stand out. Same for the party. Tee wedding is much stronger for showing that kind of work.

This is my note overall - Let some things play in real time. Even though it is a reel, it should stand on its own as a piece of entertainment. I would play full pieces of your work. 20-30 seconds at a time or so. The frequent edits make it seem like you are trying to cover something. That's how I would feel if it was sent to me. It seems to me that you have a lot to be proud of. Let it play.

When I put my reel together, my primary objective is to involve the audience so they forget they are watching my reel. If they feel involved, you have connected with them. That is the goal when speaking to any audience, large or small. The last thing you want is for your audience (of one) to feel bored. Anything but bored....

As for the crawl at the end. Is there a way to put things in a more assertive way? Like Director, Editor, Writer. Showing so much dilutes the things you may want to focus on. Play to your strengths. You can cover the rest in an interview.

Compression looked good. Audio was good. Text was clear and readable.

Hope that helps.

Best of luck.

Here are my thoughts, for what they are worth.

Too long. I have come to learn that your reel should not be more than a couple of minutes, maybe 5 at the most. That is what I have been told by people who are asking for mine. They want a quick look at what you can do, your reel should showcase your absolute best shots. 9 minutes might not seem like a long time but if they are reviewing a lot of reels they probably will not look at your entire tape. Wow them right out of the gate. Anyway like I said for what its worth, good luck.

you would most likely receive more comments if you actually posted a link to the reel. thats generally what people do around here ;)

I did have the link up for a bit, had just over 100 hits on the video, 1 comment unfortunatly :(
