Hi all,
I'm in the process of budgeting for a rig that i would like to purchase within the next two weeks. It's really my first proper foray into the video world and i have decided to go with a 7D as i will still be doing a lot of photography work. I am mainly going to be doing travel doccumentary work this year, with the intent of moving into live music recording and music videos when i return home next year. I will be travelling through Europe for two months in the summer, amongst other things. My budget is around £2800, that leaves me with about £150 to cover my bases if anything blows out of proportion cost wise or i need to get something i originally hadn't planned for etc etc. So far i have come up with this list:
Canon 7D £1200 ish
Tamron 17-50 2.8 VC £300
Extreme Sandisk 16GB £70
Kingston Elite Pro 16GB £33
Lowepro Computrekker AW Plus £140
CPM DSLR Shooter rig + Handles £300
D-Focus + 3 gears £160
2 Manfrotto quick release adapters £40
PK - EOS adapter £15
Fader ND £70
Some sort of Shoulder mount £?
Audio: Either a Zoom H4N or a
Rode Stereo Videomic £?
Total: £ 2328
What else do i need? I already have a manfrotto tripod and a semi-fluid head, that will do me fine in that department. The indislider mini has piqued my interest as well, especially at that price, however it may just be a pain to carry around europe. I'd certainly use it in other situations though. My real dilema is with the shoulder mount; I really love the CPM Filmtools stuff, hence my inclusion of their shooter rig ( I have visions of doing low shots running through foreign markets after mates etc with the top handle), however their shoulder mount does not suit my needs at all. I need something which places the cage above rather than below the rails so that i can look at the 7D's screen - i don't really have any intention of purchasing a monitor. The Indirails UltraCompact looks good with the offset shoulder mount design, it's basically exactly what i need but i'd prefer to have the CPM cage over just the rails and handle. I don't think that it's possible to buy just the shoulder mount part, any suggestions for someone that does sell just the piece that i could attach to the rails on the CPM cage? I was also thinking about one of the ebay/adorama shoulder braces to place it on, but they're quite bulky. The ability to have it come of the cage easily would be a real bonus, i was originally thinking of just buying CPM's shoulder ring and a few extra pieces and then attaching the shoulder mount via quick release to the bottom of the cage, however if there is a solution which is also offset i'd love to know about it.
I haven't factored in buying an LCDVF/equivalent, should I? I have 20/20 vision and don't really know if it's necessary. I guess it's something that i really have to find out through experience.
Audio is my other dilema, what should i go with? The convenience of just buying the Rode mic and not having to bother about syncing audio is a rather appealing, how much does the AGC really affect audio quality? Should i be worried about it? This is the one area that i haven't really done much reading into. I have about £500 to go towards the shoulder mount + audio and anything else you guys think i should have, so what are your opinions?
Any advise you can give would be greatly appreciated
My thanks,
Sean
