My review of the B&S Masterseries of Filmmakin

I ordered, recieved, and watched the Birns and Sawyer Master series of Filmmaking Panasonic DVX-100: Tips, Tricks and Basic Operation DVD, then I called the people I bought it from and asked to return it for a refund. The title is decieving. They say "Master Series of Filmmaking", and "Basic" in the title. Basic is closer to the truth, any filmmaker looking for master level instruction will not find it here. And while Nancy Schreiber is on the DVD, she's only there for about 20 minutes of the hour, first talking about the pre-production decision to use the DVX-100 on November, then basically going around the camera pointing out where all the little buttons and switches are - nothing really informative beyond what can be gleened from the first few pages of the owners manual. The picture quality is quite good and it's in widescreen format, but the image looks more like a Varicam than a DVX-100. While Nancy is going over the camera for you, you can hear office phones ringing in the background. It seems like kind of an impromptu shoot, not a very professional production. The later segments are done by a gentleman who just goes through a walkthrough of the cameras menus, occasionally stopping to explain why a particular feature it there, but just as often not getting into any nitty gritty of real-world useages, or even techniques. I downloaded the menu walkthrough document from dvxuser.com and it was at least as informative if not more so. If you are new to videography, and just got your DVX100 out of the box and you have no idea even where to begin, this video might occasionally offer something you could appreciate. However, if you have ever used a pro or semi pro camera before, and can read and follow along with the manual that comes with the camera. You don't need this DVD unless you just like to look at Nancy Schreiber. The tail end of the video is a brief history of Birns and Sawyer, and serves almost like an infomercial for the company. In my opinion NOT worth the price they are asking. Caveat Emptor.

Yeah, I had the same experience with the title's variation on the Canon XL1s... Nothing new that I couldn't gather from internet or marketing literature.

Their lighting video (I don't have it with me now, so I don't remember the exact title) was much more informative, at least when I first viewed it. Nine months and several trainee gigs later, it's possible even that would look and sound trivial now. Good opportunity to watch it again...

Yeah, I felt raped by that DVD at that price too. I can't believe they have the nerve to sell that POS for that price.

Anyone want to trade?

I'm working on a DVX DVD/book combo right now, and I'm curious as to what B&S put on their DVD and why people universally seem disappointed in it. I want to make sure that I don't repeat their mistakes, and that the info I put on mine is of real, actual value.

To do that, I'd like to see the B&S DVD. If anyone wants to do a trade, the first person to PM me saying they'll send me their DVD will get a free copy of my DVD/book package as soon as it's available.

Any takers?

Too bad mine is XL1s... it would be in the mail already.

I'm aiming to have the project done by the end of this month, hopefully sooner. And someone's PM'd me for the exchange, so we're all set. Thanks!

I'd love to see this happen. Keep us updated Barry as there seems to be no real definative user guides available.

Thanks to forum member Michael_G, I've now received and watched the Birns & Sawyer DVD.

I think this disk isn't meant so much for owners of the camera as it perhaps is targeted towards renters who have never seen the DVX, won't look at the manual, and have to shoot in a couple of hours.

The book/DVD package I'm preparing goes into vastly more detail, including some bonuses and tutorials I hope people will really appreciate. The DVD is now done (pending the addition of one last insert shot) and the book portion has its own little surprise or two. Most of the "meat" is going to be in the book portion, so if someone wants to really learn the camera it'll involve some reading, but the DVD has extensive examinations of the scene file settings and some other tutorials that should make for a well-rounded package.

Thanks to all those who offered to send their B & S DVD, and especially to Michael_G who got it here first, he'll get the first copy of my book/DVD package that rolls off the presses! ;D
