my reel

Hi, all. I've recently joined the ranks of the unemployed and for the first time I've had to put together a reel. Would like to know what you all think. Please be constructive.
Thanks.

To be honest, it didn't really grab me. I have to step back and think "if I were hiring someone for this or that, what would I be looking for?"

First of all, the beginning with Kim Cattrall, why is it so long on her? Are you the guy interviewing her? If not then I wouldn't stay so long on her. The way it's set up it seems like you're trying to say "hey, look at this, I've filmed a celebrity", but it's pushing it in our faces rather than just showing us. Doesn't seem to fit with a reel to stay so long on one thing unless there's a purpose for staying on it.

The rest is okay.

There's one section between 1:21 and 1:24, just seems really low res/bad quality video. Not sure if I would include that.

For a DP, there are some great shots in there, and some not so great. But some of the not so great ones show that you work well as a documentary videographer, so it's up to you what you want to convey.

Lastly, the titles look really unprofessional. When I took on a DP for a project I did over the summer, I didn't just look at the footage, i looked at the presentation (and I didn't call someone back because his website was like a 90's geocities page). DPs have to have the "eye", and everything should look aesthetically nice. Make more professional titles at the beginning and end, so I wouldn't do simple ariel on black background.

Anyways, hope this helps!

Jon,
Thanks for the input. Very specific, which I appreciate. I had a feeling that I was overdoing the Kim Catrall thing -- thanks for confirming it... Most of my work has been in the reality/doc genre, so I guess it shows. As for the titles I wanted to keep em simple, but maybe someone else has an opinion? Thanks, and if anyone else has input...

Oh, well the titles are fine as simple, but the ones you have are simple but don't look too great. You'd be surprised what you can do with a change of fonts, a bit of rearranging, spacing, kerning, etc...

But I guess it's just a matter of opinion. If you want to keep it like that it's fine. It's not terrible.
