My Reel is up

Re: My Reel is up

Pat- I've have been looking at your reel with curiousity and am pretty impressed. I honestly don't know how to judge these reels though..but wanted to say thanks for sharing and..

ask how you got the "frame look" in the early shot with the girl with the vampire like teeth? was this just a photoshoped frame added into the edit? looks cool.

Re: My Reel is up

The "frame look" was achieved by having a really dirty gate on the camera. This was the second time we used an Arri-S camera and had no idea what a gate was. I don't think that gate was ever cleaned. :-/
Thanks for the feedback.

Re: My Reel is up

how long did you study at NYFA?
that's pretty impressive. I like that shot of the girl with her hair covering her face revealing her nose.. that's creepy- goes with the ring and the grudge altogether.
anyway, hope you continue to work harder after NYFA because ain't nobody gonna help you afterwards.

Re: My Reel is up

2 of those shots were way too dark. (towards the end)

But most of those are really nice shots....great use of lighting.
I might end up at NYFA for a year so good to see something from someone who went there.

Words of wisdom.

Re: My Reel is up

Some of your shots were dark and wasnt sure if that was supposed to be shot that way. There was one shot with a woman smoking a cigarrette that in my opinion needed some light on her face. According to the background, it looked like the sun was going down at the time you shot that scene. I would have used a light and/or a bounce card on her face.

Re: My Reel is up

Pat, I have to be honest with you and say this did not excite me. I don't think it's necessarily the shots you chose (although that's part of it) but it's the way it's edited together.

Given this is such a short piece, I think you should try to pack in as much as possible. As it is, the edits are running long and there's a certain energy that's missing. Maybe a punchier soundtrack and some quicker editing would change that.

Anyway, this is just my opinion, the shots look good, but I think you are underselling yourself with this piece.

Re: My Reel is up

Thanks disjecta, do you know where I can find good examples of reels to compare? I have recently bought a DVX100A.

I went through the one year filmmaking class at NYFA. I highly recommend it if you want to be a DP or want to know how to make films for Hollywood.

Any look that I am trying to achieve comes from emulating Roy H. Wagner. A DP I met at the school who mostly does television, but has done A Nightmare On Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors. He points out the fact that he mostly tries to get the most out of one source of light and a lot of bounce.
