my reel all shot with my DVX....

Some thoughts

One question (that your reel may want to answer on its own)..what are you showing?

Are you a director? D.P.? Camera operator?

I am assuming since you have no dialogue that you are either a DP or a camera operator. If so, I would avoid all of the shots of people chatting. You are focusing on your work, not the actors. If you want to feature shots with emotional talking that is great, but chit chat is mostly distracting and makes you wonder what you are not hearing. The guys in the grey shirts are good.

If you are going to play music under the whole thing what do you want it to say about you? Your style? Do you have energy? Are you creative? Quirky? Music can say a lot. What do you think yours is saying?

I would suggest focusing more on your shots that are lit, composed and more interesting. Less of the "real time" footage from the pieces.

The most visually interesting stuff is the parking garage (underground?) footage. Then the guys in the small garage. Much of the office and the outdoor daylight stuff is not really distinctive. It mostly just shows that you can operate the camera. It does not suggest anything that you may add to a project? There is not really a style that is "yours" demonstrated.

If this is a reel for camera work you have a lot of freedom to put whatever you want in it. You can show the scripted footage, then mix in some arty shots, cars, trains, nature etc. ...rack focus, good camera moves, good use of lighting. Again, not sure what you are selling yourself as.

Hope some of this is helpful.

that helps..i haven't shot a whole lot so i don't have much to pull from. i'm shooting two more shorts in december. i understand what you are saying...about using less "real time" footage. as soon as i get some more footage, i will revamp it completely. i juat had to put stuff together so i had something. thanks so much for your input!

I checked out the demo reel site, and I would try to implement some of those things into your reel... The pace was a bit too slow for me.
