My promo video!

Hey guys --

So I haven't been around as much lately because I've been laboring over my new project. This isn't exactly a "user film" so I thought I'd just share it here where I usually hang out. This is a sort of promo/prequel for my upcoming series. Although I've been hard at work on the actual nuts and bolts of the project, I really wanted to get this out before Christmas. So -- mission accomplished! Time for some sushi!

Being here has always helped me to stay on purpose. Thanks a ton for that.

Great suff. Very creative. Look forward to seeing more.

Not sure if you're after feedback but... I never like obvious "old film" effects.

Looks interesting. I'm with Searcher. I don't think the old film look works on this, but that's probably just personal preference.

Feedback is always appreciated. The effect was an issue of contention for sure. There's a lot of different reasons for the effect, some artistic/story related and some that have to do with the actual animation render. It was actually more obnoxious in an earlier render, slide and flopping all over the place. I brought it back extensively to .02 and .03 respectively. In the end I felt like cybo's music welcomed the effect and the idea that this is a historical instance in the series also lent itself to some filtering. You can go a million different ways. In the end my vision was for it to be degraded video and I did my best to reach that end. (and hopefully the very clean animation plate of the actual series will offer a nice juxtaposition). Thanks again you guys!!

Loved the animation and while I'm not overly fond of old film effects - I think it worked here. I would like to see it toned down just a bit (flicker wise...or maybe I'm just overly sensitive to flicker?) but overall very nice feel to the whole piece and well edited.

I'm on the film thing too. I think it would be good to start it out that way then make it become "clear". It is quite distracting the further you get into the video, but other than that it's very cool.

The pacing is really fast. I think you should slow it down and stretch it out. It's not even 6 minutes long. If you added some new material and slowed down the pacing you could get that puppy over 10 minutes easy.

Yeah, my girl is "overly sensitive" to flicker as well. She pretty much vomited watching Cloverfield. lol

What's interesting is that it seems that the people who watch it full screen have more problem with the flickering than do those who watch it minimized on Vimeo or Youtube. Like, if it's playing in the center of a black or white space (the way it would if it was being projected), then it doesn't seem to be so much a bother. Thanks for checking it out and for the feedback! :D

I think it'll be interesting to see if the film effect is as bothersome once this promo/prequel actually exists in the greater whole. Right now the plan is to do 22-24 animated webisodes (comedy) along with a 4 "issue" motion comic arc (adventure crime) and a live action short film (action). We're also going to be doing a villains-based web comic and a set of serial novels (hence the transmedia nature of the thing). We're doing the comedy series, live action short and web comic for free and will be selling the motion comics on iTunes and the serial novels via Amazon Kindle/POD. But eventually we'll have a DVD of all the visual stuff and in that context this promo/prequel is only roughly as long as a (long) credits sequence.

My idea right now is that when I actually piece the whole thing together, I'll provide sufficient dead space on the screen surrounding this video so that it's a little less daunting.

I wasn't concerned too much about the length. In a way I was more concerned with people feeling like it was going too slow. In the end, though, I did cut over 2 and a half minutes of animation because of the length of the song. After Cybo had given me the go ahead, I was pretty dead set on making the animation work with her song Bleeding Colors. I certainly had to sacrifice some stuff, and maybe I'll do an extended, non-AE filtered version on the DVD eventually, but as it stands the music was really important, I think, to the promo/prequel. Gotta make sacrifices sometimes. :)
